American-Made Cheese Named World's Best for the First Time Ever

Rogue River Blue Cheese, produced by Rogue Creamery in Southern Oregon, is an organic, cave-aged blue cheese that is wrapped in pear spirit-soaked Syrah grape leaves.

The Savencia Fromage & Dairy-owned creamery beat out some tough competition: More than 3,800 cheeses from 42 countries and 6 continents were evaluated by a panel of 260 judges in Bergamo, Italy this month.

"This is truly the greatest distinction a cheese can receive. What an extraordinary validation of our commitment to quality, the place that inspires our cheese—Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley—and the excellence of the growing American artisan cheese industry, I am humbled and filled with gratitude," said Rogue Creamery President David Gremmels.

Oh sorry about the “full article” bit. I inadvertently picked up the wrong section originally, neglected to delete that line.

Nice they call it "Blue Cheese" instead of "Bleu Cheese"

$235 for a wheel of it.
I love blue cheese but I think I’ll stick with what I can get at Trader Joe’s.

It is a knock off of the real "blue cheese," Roquefort, made with Penicillium roquefortii., The French have appellation laws (AOC) so they have to call it a blue cheese. Aso, it is made with cow milk while the real stuff is with sheep's milk. It may be good, but not the real thing.

I just picked up some fancy-schmancy crumbled blue cheese to use in salads for this week. (No, it’s not Treasure Cave.) Now I gotta go read the label and see what’s in it.

When we went to Italy years ago I was stunned to learn from a tour guide that real mozzarella is made with the milk of cape buffalo...aka: “water buffalo”.

Every country has their own version of “blue cheese.” England has Stilton, Italy has Gorgonzola....and on and on. Taste is subjective, so the winner means nothing to people in other countries and places. It is just a game, just as the “World” Series is.

I remember the local (and only) store where I grew up had a round shaped cheese. You could just get some crackers and a small slice of cheese. It was pretty good.

I think the best cheese is those Christmas gift packs which I buy after they have been reduced to 1/4 original price. I eat the little wedges with potato chips.

Cape buffalo and water buffalo are not the same thing. I don’t think anyone’s ever milked a Cape Buffalo, and lived to tell of it.

“I was stunned to learn from a tour guide that real mozzarella is made with the milk of cape buffalo.”

If you ever get a chance to get some real buffalo mozzarella, do it! It is wonderful, wonderful stuff. Much creamier and softer than what we are used to.

Upstate New York is the only state other than Cali that does wine and cheese well, but that’s only by North American standards. ;)

It’s a great cheese! The US actually has a lot of very fine cheeses. Checking the fridge now...

But first I think I may have to view a few episodes of Wallace and Grommet to get in the mood.
