Who’s “changing history”? The groups that put up those monuments lied and falsified more than anybody.

Yep, I heard they are 30,000 strong. No, 3,000. Would you believe 3 guys and a couple of computers?

I'm sure you're being facetious because CSA-II (which calls itself a provisional government) shows a national organization structure, with operations from Maine to Louisiana to Washington state.

The were also able to field some protesters on the ground in Pittsboro Oct 19th, so definitely more than some online do nothing boomer chat group.

That’s a factoid lost on the Jonah Goldberg brigade here

I never saw these south demonizers in my life till I came here including 82-88 in manhattan

They are neo conservatives but not entirely some are just plain libs

Frequently over the years they get zotted for social liberalism and then slink back in though today there are only a half dozen serious ones left two of whom are here

Anyone who believes it’s ok for us to honor our confederate ancestry as the govt did bestowing vets rights and presidents like Reagan and Trump have is considered a neoconfederate by them which is akin to white or Christian or any ethnic nationalist as opposed to civic nationalism which is their creed

Their bible is anything by Macpherson

It’s hard to stop in black municipalities like New Orleans or very liberal places like Charlottesville or Chapel Hill

Note some places like Alabama and Missisissippi and Texas and Tennessee and others have state laws baring locals from doing so

I think Louisiana does now

That’s the issue though is liberal or black local jurisdiction

30 people. That’s the number the press said showed up.

It amazes me how FR has scaremongers that sound like they take their cues from the SPLC.

“A crowd of roughly 30 people representing members of several extreme far-right and neo-Confederate groups set up camp around a Confederate battle flag that had been erected on private land facing Horton Middle School, named for George Moses Horton, an enslaved poet.”

I live about halfway between Pittsboro and Siler City.

Pittsboro is a bedroom town for Chapel Hill.

County government seems to be a battle between them and the old boy developers who can’t wait to build McMansions on 1/8 acres lots.

Most of us want to be left alone.

Interesting (though tempting, I think I’ll pass).

Confederate soldiers are US army veterans, by law. Their memorials must be treated as what they are, US veteran memorials.

They are regarded as US veterans for the purpose of veterans benefits (actually at the point the law was passed for the purpose of benefits for their veterans).

If they are buried in a National Cemetery, the federal government is authorized to provide headstones and maintain the graves.

That doesn't mean that the federal government said, "Okay, you are now US veterans" and it doesn't affect local monuments which are under local authority.

What's going on now is local communities want to remove local monuments and state governments are trying to prevent them. That gives "state's rights" a new twist. But if it's a town monument, it's up to the town.

I suggest leaving the statues standing and changing the inscriptions, so that "generic Confederate soldier" becomes "generic 1860s soldier" and we can pretend the soldier is whoever we want to.

In a way, yes. Some Confederate soldiers were buried at Arlington when the administration was rather slack. Some were prisoners. Some had been executed. Some were buried because they couldn't be separated from the union dead. Some just because nobody was paying attention. They weren't supposed to be there.

Wikipedia puts it this way:

The federal government did not permit the decoration of Confederate graves at the cemetery, however. As Quartermaster General, Meigs had charge of the Arlington cemetery (he did not retire until February 6, 1882), and he refused to give families of Confederates buried there permission to lay flowers on their loved ones' graves. In 1868, when families asked to lay flowers on Confederate graves on Decoration Day (now known as Memorial Day), Meigs ordered that the families be barred from the cemetery. Union veterans' organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR; whose membership was open only to Union soldiers) also felt that rebel graves should not be decorated. In 1869, GAR members stood watch over Confederate graves at Arlington National Cemetery to ensure they were not visibly honored on Decoration Day. Cemetery officials also refused to allow the erection of any monument to Confederate dead and declined to permit new Confederate burials (either by reburial or through the death of veterans).

At the end of the 19th century, there was interest in national reconciliation, so over the objections of Union veterans, a Confederate section was opened and a Confederate memorial commissioned, erected and dedicated. Some Confederate soldiers buried in the Arlington area were reburied in the National Cemetery, even though they still weren't supposed to be buried at other national cemeteries.

In authorizing the section, Congress didn't declare that Confederate veterans were US veterans, anymore than the burial of German prisoners in US military cemeteries made German soldiers American veterans.
