Editorial: SC builds better planes and cars. Why don’t we build better kids?

It’s hard to keep up with all the studies touting South Carolina as a great place to do business. The latest, from Area Development magazine, ranked South Carolina third-best overall in its 2019 Top States for Doing Business, behind only Georgia and Tennessee.

The magazine based its rankings on states’ objective and subjective scores on a dozen attributes. It found that South Carolina had the nation’s best business incentives and its second-best workforce development programs.

We finished third in shovel-ready sites, cooperative and responsive state government, favorable utility rates, speed of permitting and overall cost of doing business. We had the fourth most favorable regulatory environment and the fifth most competitive labor environment.

Pretty heady stuff.

But it raises the question: If we’re doing such a great job making ourselves a friendly place for businesses to locate and expand, why aren’t we better off?

Clearly, we are landing more than our share of big fish — with Boeing, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and practically every tire maker in the world, we’ve built aerospace and automotive industries pretty much from scratch in a generation. And smaller but still impressive businesses are announcing plans to open and expand here on a weekly basis. These are astonishing achievements.

Kids are not built, they are raised.

And they are being raised to believe six impossible things before breakfast.

I didn’t read the whole article or even excerpt I confess...but Boeing’s South Carolina plant is under scrutiny for shoddy manufacturing just saying.

(The head of the plant has resigned and moved on thankfully so hopefully that improves.)

Lol. Has the author seen a public school lately? They are psych units, not educational facilities.

Gosh, if only humans were nothing more than programmable robots, just think how much better the world would be for people like the author. :/

Building the best kids requires a parent who is actually there, instead of an endless stream of babysitters, nannies, daycare workers, teachers, coaches, etc.

It isn’t like there is any secret about it.

There are just people refusing to do what is needed because they value adult toys, prestige, and early retirement over their children.

In the end, they often wind up in some home and the children who barely know them never visit. They just supply them with nurses, and pastors, and pet therapy...

Because 80% of their blacks don’t marry and have daddies and few are raised by the blood mom either

Lawmakers did act this year to approve the biggest pay raises for teachers in decades,

Pay raises that will be issued across the board, without reference to the employee's effectiveness.

along with money to put more mental health counselors and police in schools,

Evidence of the psych ward/prison environment that makes it nearly impossible for motivated students to learn.

and temporary relief from some standardized tests —

Thereby guaranteeing a lack of accountability all around. "If you don't like the results, stop measuring!"

all designed to stem the growing teacher shortage.

See "psych ward/prison," above. And you can't "stem" a shortage.

In summary, they will be shocked, shocked! in a few years when there is no improvement in student results.

More money for public schools is not the answer.

As a refugee from Ct in SC, I can tell you that I read editorials like this 30 years ago. After spending trillions of dollars on public ed, educational achievement in Ct is worse. Teachers got big fat salaries and generous pension and health benefits. The kids and parents got squat. Public school unions bought Democrat politicians to shield and reward them.

The answer is vouchers, school choice and charter schools to serve intact, engaged families.
