Five Truths Most Americans Are Afraid to Say
Townhall.com ^ | October 20, 2019 | Tim Wildmom

Our world can be a dark place.

There is abundant evidence of this, but one recent example was a threat of possible violence tied to the October opening of the film, “The Joker.” According to U.S. News & World Report, the FBI became involved when references were made to the 2012 shooting in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater during another Batman movie. This comes after the tragic mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the summer, when a total of 31 people were murdered and dozens injured by gunmen with widely different belief systems.

How do we understand such bloodshed coming from divergent ideologies? Who do we blame? Many may play a part in our national lament, but none get to the root of America’s cultural sickness. I believe most Americans know that’s true, even if they can’t or won’t express it.

As we think about the moral darkness that engulfs much of American culture now, let us press these truths into our communities and nation as loudly and as often as we can.

God matters.

Although he was not an evangelical Christian, even Thomas Jefferson, one of our nation’s Founding Fathers, famously said, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty.”

As a writer of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson acknowledged that God is the bedrock of our national way of life. Since “all men are created equal,” he said, then—and only then—can the American people be said to be “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.”

The culture war is really a war over God. Without a republic based on the ideas of our founders, it will eventually cease to exist. What house can remain stable and upright when the foundations are overthrown?

Absolute truth matters.

In his farewell address, George Washington outlined the dual pillars upon which the nation’s political system would rest: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

Both religion and morality, said Washington, were the “great pillars of human happiness.”

I am afraid that today the hero of the Revolutionary War and our first president would have been open to charges of bigotry, close-mindedness, and even conspiring to establish a theocracy!

In the wake of numerous acts of violence, everyone is talking about what’s right and wrong. But without a source of absolute truth, it’s all just personal opinion. Rejecting God and His Word has set us on the path of destruction.

John Adams, our second president, said that “we have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. … Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Strong marriages and families matter.

It might seem unnecessary to say, but no society can survive without vibrant marriages and resilient families. Yet these bedrock institutions have been under siege for decades.

According to Pew Research, less than half (46%) of American children under the age of 18 are living in a home with two married parents in their first marriage. In 1960, 73% of U.S. children did.

In terms of children born out of wedlock, the trend is just as shocking: 41% of children are in that category, compared to about 5% in 1960. Do I need to reference the laundry list of maladies afflicting America as the result of broken marriages and shattered families?

The Bible matters.

The ideas of our Founding Fathers were the driving force for greatness, and those ideas cannot be overthrown without devastating consequences. But if we’re talking about foundations, we really need to go further back than the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.

We need to return to the true foundation of America—the Bible. We need to return to what the Scripture calls “the ancient paths” of obedience to God. The Lord spoke to His people through the prophet Jeremiah when He said: “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16, NASB).

Rest. Don’t we all long for it? It is found in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Peace with God—that’s what America needs.

The church matters.

The solutions to our problems are not going to come from Washington, D.C. Don’t get me wrong, we must remain politically engaged. But does anyone believe the dysfunction in our nation’s capital will result in the restoration of America?

The solution to our problems is revival, and that means that the true Christian community in our nation must study God’s Word, pray, bear witness to the truth through the preaching of the gospel, and be ready to give a defense for the hope that lies within us.

As the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 3:15, the church is “the pillar and support of the truth.” We must remain salt and light in these dark times. That is the call of God on the lives of each of us who call upon the name of Jesus Christ. Yes, God is in control, but for His own mysterious purposes and glory, He calls believers individually and corporately to be among the instruments of His will.

The American Family Association exists to give voice to the foundational biblical truths that have made America the greatest nation in history. And though the forces of hell are bent on turning those truths on their heads, AFA will stand unmoved by the undertow of evil that threatens America.

I’m convinced that many in our nation believe these five truths but are too intimidated to say them. They know that cultural elitists, political leaders, corporations, schools, and, sadly, even many church leaders will mock and vilify them.

But we are not afraid to say them.

All true except the last one. The churches will have to be fixed before they are capable of helping anyone else.

In the dark days of treating the mentally ill, the solution was to lock people up and keep them away from sharp objects. Now we try to understand and treat the underlying causes. Societal violence needs the same approach or it will never be resolved.

Yeah, these are truths that people struggle to proclaim in mixed company. But there is another truth that is even tougher to say- diversity is weakness.

It will ultimately lead to dissolution. Diversity is a synonym for disunion. Culture, language, and borders are the definition of a nation. People who preach “civic nationalism” ignore history.

Yes, you are right. At least half the churches in America actually promote sin. Go in the church and ask a few youngsters what “living in sin” means. They have no clue.

The world is full of mis-wired humans. Failure to embrace that is the source of most of mankind’s ills. There are more than few mis-wired persons at/in church.

“ Rest. Don’t we all long for it? It is found in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Peace with God—that’s what America needs.”

He comes up wit this random statement at the end of the Bible piece.

I think about it every time I’m out on Sunday. If I’m visiting someone I still think there’ll be no traffic. It’s Sunday.

The whole world is out on Sunday. They don’t spend the day with their family after church. All the stores are open.

It’s out of order

Some Americans are apparently afraid to acknowledge or speak truth, but others are Truth Seekers; they acknowledge truth wherever it presents itself.

Contempt for truth--truth for its own sake--is the evil most fundamental to the moral depravity that is destroying America and the decadence that is destroying Western Civilization.

The "higher truth" proclaimed by the Left is nothing but untruth, just as their "new morality" is nothing but immorality.

Churches cannot be “fixed”. They have generally become places where men promote themselves, their ministries, and taking money from God’s people.

Nothing new here. In Acts 20, Paul warned the elders of the church in Ephesus that this would happen. Only thing now is that it’s almost universal.

“28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. 34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. 35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Find me a man in church leadership today who demonstrates this life.....

But saints are not without guilt - for they want men to follow, to tell them what to do, to exalt - because so few know how to walk with God themselves and how to live daily with Him alone as their Lord and Master.

The spiritual condition of churches today is tragic, and the world rejects it because behold! It looks at the church and sees nothing different from itself - and says, “No thank you.”

I love when I see a pastor with 3-4 vehicles, a house I could have only afforded to buy, and the $10,000 per month pension plan. Nothing is too good for our pastors. If you are ever in a Korean church, the aforementioned benefits plus paid Christian schooling for their kids, 2-4 trips for the family to Korea every year, 2-3 mission trips that include the pastors family.... That vow of poverty or simply to have enough to live and serve God.

I’m actually thinking about coming out of retirement to preach - can make more in a year preaching than I made working for the Department of State at the end of a 33-year career with government.

Amen. Insofar as you define church as a government ordained institution that is privy to exist if it meets certain parameters.

But, if you define the church as individuals who have come to the realization that they are not filthy sinners who, yes, occasionally make poor decisions and that their Heavenly Father loves them regardless and Jesus became One of them so He could have fellowship with them and experience a life filled with joy instead of enduring a guilt-tripped life trying to undo Adam and Eve's poor decision when Jesus already did that, then it can be fixed. But it's up to you and me. Are you up for it?

Jesus said He would build His church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. I am quite sure He is doing as He promised!

But as Wayne Jacobsen asked a conference of pastors to whom he was speaking, “Ok, it’s been 2000 years now. How do you think He’s doing?”

Silence. All know the true spiritual state of things.

He then asks, “Is it possible that what Jesus was refering to when He used the word ‘church’ is something completely different from what you and I think of?”

Of course. What is called ‘the church’ by the world and most Christians is not the church at all. His church is being built, is spiritually strong and powerful (see third world countries) and victorious. And generally very poor.

One thing I discovered ministering in third world countries: “the poor are rich in faith.” Was James describing us today? Sadly, not many. Not unless we are ‘poor in spirit’. Something rarely found among the wealthy.

Looks like three truths.
Three of them are rewordings of the same thing.

Amen to that, too. God's Word never returns to Him void.
