Florida GOP Rep. Rooney says he won't seek reelection
The Hill ^ | 10/19/19 | Rachel Frazin

Republican Rep. Francis Rooney (Fla.), who this week refused to rule out impeaching President Trump, announced Saturday that he won't seek reelection.

Rooney revealed his decision in a Fox News interview. A spokesman for Rooney confirmed to The Hill that the lawmaker won't run for a third-term.

"I don't think I really do and I don't think I really want one," Rooney said in the interview when asked if he needed a third term.

Rooney said he came to Congress to secure money for Everglades projects and for an offshore drilling ban to protect Florida.

"I thought it might take three terms, but I think I've done it in less than two, we've gotten over 10 times as much money per year for the Everglades," he said.

Asked if he should be added to a list of Republicans not seeking reelection in 2020, Rooney said yes while also expressing support for congressional term limits.

“I’ve done what I came to do,” he said. “I want to be a model for term limits.”

Why should he work hard on another term, he will make a fat retirement check off the back of the American Taxpayer after doing nothing.

If he’s telling the truth, good for him.

Great idea on term limits, but the “set for life” retirement package gets old for the suppliers of the funding.

A congress critter telling the truth, that would be unique.

Takes his pension and runs to the bank.

He can’t wait to put a knife in Trump’s back. He knows that will ruin him politically, so he is just getting out in front of it.

Good riddance. He is a big time Bushie and was one of the coauthors of the recent rebuke of the President.

Again, FL Republicans nominate the worst possible candidates in many situations.

I believe a member of Congress can only collect a pension after serving a minimum of 5 years.

If he’s leaving after two terms then he’s doing the taxpayers a huge favor.

I seriously doubt he's telling the truth. In fact, I believe he is being told not to run if he knows what's good for him. I had just read a tweet by DocWashburn a couple of minutes before I wandered to this thread. IMO, he's dirty as hell and getting out while he still can.

DocWashburn ‏ @DocWashburn

US Rep. Francis Rooney on Fox repeating Dem talking points, ignoring context of Mulvaney quid pro quo comments. Rooney gave $2 million to Jeb's PAC in 2015, believes in "climate change", supports 3 day waiting period on gun purchases. Gee, I wonder why he wants Trump gone.

It sounds like he is not eligible for a pension after two terms for a total of 4 years.

Congressional pension is a pension made available to members of the United States Congress. Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service. A full pension is available to Members 62 years of age with 5 years of service; 50 years or older with 20 years of service; or 25 years of service at any age. From Wikipedia

Thanks for the context. I didn’t know he was a never-Trumper. I would have known he was lying immediately.

Rooney gave Romney’s PAC $1M, plus hosted a fund raiser for him in his home.

He ran as a Republican, legislated as a RINO, and now will turn his back on the greatest president this country will ever
have. Goodbye traitor.

Once he said that he might vote for impeachment his career ended as a Republican...this is just him accepting that reality.
