ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey’s offensive into northeast Syria will end if Kurdish fighters in the region drop their weapons and withdraw from a planned “safe zone”, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, but warned that no power could stop it until then.

Erdogan said the quickest solution was for militants to drop their weapons and pull back from the area by Wednesday evening. The operation will end when the “safe zone” is established, he said, and Turkey was not open to negotiating this.

Tell Turkey to get their troops on THEIR side of the border. Occupation is not a solution.

I’m guessing the two million “refugees” Erdogan is planning on pushing into this “buffer zone” will not be Kurds.

Simpler solution, the offense will end once all Turkish solders are dead. All sides are bad, several are erstwhile allies, some we’ve abandoned. Maybe we should just air drop arms, quarantine the area, and let all Islamic cult members kill each other off, then we take care of the last person standing to eliminate the scourge of Islam?

Who let Turkey in to NATO and into Europe for that matter?

We are stuck between two allies and Turkey wants the safe zone to send Syrian refugees home and not into Europe making an even bigger mess.

Agree on Turkey and NATO. No way you form an alliance with a Muslim nation.

This “buffer zone” idea has been promoted here on FR by those of us who think it’s a good way to stem the flow of illegals and gangsters from coming to the US..

Except the Turkey Occupied Buffer Zone is in Syria.

Hardly the same as the Mexican/USA buffer zone you're suggesting.

A lot of folks here keep asking why Turkey is in NATO... I suggest for all of you asking this question... “Who let Turkey in to NATO and into Europe for that matter?” go and study some post WW2 history culminating with the “end” of the Cold War. It’s all there. Don’t be like my grandsons and expect someone like me to come along and have to tell you everything you’ll ever need to know... because that’s how DemoRATS and zombies come into being!

“Tell Turkey to get their troops on THEIR side of the border. Occupation is not a solution.” And yet, we’re removing our troops from Syria, where we’ve had them occupying space for how long now? Tell me again how many countries have U.S. troops deployed in them, how many “buffer zones” are manned by our forces, and what are the super-critical, tactical and strategic reasons for their being there? When it comes to “getting troops on their side of the border... we’re the biggest violators of all! The better question is this: “Who in the hell made us the world’s policeman?!?”

“Agree on Turkey and NATO. No way you form an alliance with a Muslim nation.” Again, see first paragraph. Without Turkey in NATO, we had no way to keep an eye on the Soviets via U2 overflights of Soviet territory, and more recently, there is no “guaranteed” control over the Dardanelles or Bosporus Straits. People, you need to get intellectually involved in your historical educations, participate in it, and quit being so emotional! Do the research... don’t believe every word you read or hear from the lying media!

This is great. They are working it out. They clearly don’t need U.S. forces there to do so.

His “safe zone” is a twenty mile wide stretch along the Syria-Turkey border. A number of major cities/towns are within that 20 mile deep area. It is as much as asking the Kurds and others in that area to give Turkey a 20 mile wide stretch of Syria and push most of the Kurds of Syria back deeper into Syria. That would mean a new de facto border, 20 miles further into Syria, with the Kurds even more resentful and angry. I doubt Assad and Russia will agree with that.

The Kurds ought to respond by demanding Turkey move all military installations on it’s side of the border, back 20 miles deeper into Turkey.

Well the deal is done now. The SDF and Assad’s SAA signed an agreement for the Kurd’s Rojava to rejoin Syria, wall to wall. Turkey’s “safe zone” ain’t safe no more.

The Syrian Kurds will be semi-autonomous, similar to Iraqi Kurds.

The SDF will become a regional force, similar to our National Guard.

We never gave the SDF artillery or armor, they can’t fight Turkey without.

Now Assad and the Russians are taking over the fight. We just turned over a fire base outside Kobani to the Russians.

The Russians are flying combat air patrols. Assad’s armor is moving all over. The SDF has agreed to support the fighting in the Afrin area.

We will keep operational bases in SE Syria to interdict ISIS and Iranina smuggling to Hizb’allah.

Possibly. The Cold War has really only gone underground and has toned down a little bit. However, our enemies remain, some have changed for the better, some for the worst... some new ones were added... some old ones are becoming economic trading partners... as well, strategic and tactical points of interest still remain... and to a degree, the treaties we’re involved with are still relevant... although, the treaties need revising a little bit, in my opinion and observations.
