FULL TITLE: The US needs 307,000 more teachers than it currently has — but few are taking the job due to low pay

The student population is growing — and not enough teaching jobs are available to keep up.

A new report found that since the Great Recession of 2008, the country lost 60,000 jobs in education. Not only that, but 247,000 more teaching jobs should have been created to keep up with growing student enrollment as the population increases.

This has resulted in a shortfall of 307,000 teaching jobs — meaning there are over 300,000 educators currently needed right now.

The data sheds light on an ongoing national teacher shortage. Back in 2008, teaching jobs increased at the same pace as student enrollment. Since the Great Recession, or after 60,000 jobs were lost, job creation in education never kept pace with the growing student enrollment.

Other data centers have similarly staggering estimates of the teacher shortage crisis. The independent research group Learning Policy Institute estimated a 112,000 teacher shortage in 2018.

The study uses data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics analyzed by the liberal think-tank Economic Policy Institute. Educator jobs include mostly K-12 public school teachers, but also administrators, guidance counselors, and paraeducator.

What doesn't add up, is that the number of children ages 6-17 has stayed at 49.5 million (Plus or minus about 300,000) this entire century. Furthermore, based on the EPI teacher count of between 7.8 and 8.1 million over the past decade, the ratio of kids to teachers is around 6. Has anyone seen a classroom of six kids to one teacher?

I think the reality is that there way too many administrators and not enough people teaching, yet I bet the non-teachers have better pay. I also think that, with the number of kids remaining flat for the past 18 years, there is effectively no shortage of teachers and this is #FakeNews.

Tough. The left, enabled by the education profession, which skews extremely left, has made this job unbearable and undoable.

I’d rather trash the entire education system and make the HOME responsible for it’s children’s education, as it was at our founding. Things could only improve as the leftist state gets its filthy claws out of our children.

Because they require years of bs education courses. The unions want to limit the numbers, as always

Plenty of people who could teach can’t teach because of teacher union requirements of having an education degree.

Incorrect. The insane credentialing process is putting a huge burden on the school systems, requiring vast amounts of wasteful training unrelated to most teaching positions. Someone who can balance a checkbook can teach most math classes. Someone who can read well can teach most english courses. Science classes do not need a specialist. PE classes don’t need six years of education in physical fitness.

What is wrong is too much government which is designed by teach unions to force grossly higher pay. We have many young people going through the nearly 8 year process of becoming a teacher (and then the moment they get in the classroom realize that almost everything they learned is absolutely useless.)

And of course, yep, over paid administration and support services (after all, they have to get paid more than the teachers they’re supervising...) Hell, the superintendent of schools in my community (county population of 70,000 or so, TOTAL) rakes in 200 grand a year in compensation. And she wants a cost of living raise. Retroactive.

teachers do not make low pay....they make fabulous pay for a half years work and their benefits are the best in the nation.....

TPTB have a way of making a crisis out of everything.....

what teachers want is to teach fewer kids.....SO THEY CAN HIRE MORE UNION MEMBERS....

Discipline is the main reason. Teachers jobs are nearly as dangerous as cops on patrol with no gun. Any school that has to hire a police force is in big trouble. Kids aren’t learning because no one cares if they can read. It’s a very sad truth about the USA.

.......”few are taking the job”.......

Why would anyone really want the job the way classroons and students are today? I sure wouldn’t.

If you don’t believe that a man can give birth and a woman can have a penis you are unqualified to be a teacher these days.

Your post got right to the heart of the matter.

If you are unwilling to perform Leftist indoctrination, they won’t hire you. And it is a waste of your time and potentially a destruction of your professional life because you will be persecuted if you don’t toe that line.
