PG&E found 50 issues that should have been found during routine maintenance inspections if they had ever done routine maintenance inspections. The previous point hinges on the fact that their claim to have found 50 faults was not pulled out of the butt of the PG&E boardroom in order to justify the shutdown with the “Look what would have happened had we not pulled the plug” gambit. Until America rises up against board room incompetence, insane salaries and golden parachutes, these Wharton School of Economics bean counters are going to continue to prevent competent employees from being promoted into highest management from off the shop floor.

You read the part where I said south of Sonoma, right?

The power was off in the Santa Cruz mountains and right down to the beaches. That’s 130 miles south of Santa Rosa. And it was indeed ‘dead calm’ here.

And if a lousy 25 mph wind can destroy PGE lines and touch off fires, they got WAY more problems then anyone thought. Since any winter storm can produce 80+ mph winds, the lines should be able to withstand that with at least a FS of 2.0.

PG&E is essentially a quasi-government organization. They cannot do anything without government approval. They are unable to raise the funds they need to do much of the maintenance that has gone by the wayside. It’s a mess. The problems that occurred during the outage may have occurred whether the maintenance had been done or not; there is no real way to tell. To add to it, when they try to do maintenance, you have people trying to stop them. The girl who came to our place to authorize work said she frequently gets death threats and often must have an officer or deputy with her. Tree crews often have armed officers protecting them from irate people not wanting the trees cut. It’s crazy town and I am amazed they can get anything done.
