PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Maryland state lawmaker Tawanna Gaines, a Democrat from Prince George's County, has abruptly resigned after being suspected of using money she raised for her reelection campaign for personal use. She submitted her resignation to House Speaker Adrienne Jones on Friday, Oct. 4. She now faces a federal wire fraud charge.

Gaines, 67, has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2001 and, according to the AP, defrauded her campaign and its contributors of more than $22,000 from at least January 2015 through April 2018.

"After much thought and consideration, I have decided to submit my immediate resignation to the Maryland House of Delegates as of Oct. 4th, 2019," Gaines wrote.

It would appear that someone in the Democratic Party gave her a strong hint that she’d removed if she didn’t voluntarily leave, and the public mess would not be pleasant.

On criminal intent...it’s a waste of good jail space for her, but you need to have some kind of stiff situation to prevent this from continuing. Maybe they ought to have a interstate-pick-up-trash team and you do like 100 days of service for your crime.

The announcement of her resignation Monday stunned colleagues, who said Gaines loved being in state government.

"I was shocked, to put it mildly," said Sen. Paul Pinsky, D-Prince George's, who represents the same district. When he learned the resignation was tied to alleged campaign finance impropriety, Pinsky added, "I was even more taken aback. She has probably been one of the least prolific fundraisers."
