If you thought that leftist cancel culture couldn't get any more absurd, well, it just did. SpongeBob Squarepants, the popular television cartoon, has been accused of cultural appropriation by a university professor.
Campus Reform covered the strange premise put forth by professor Holly Barker of the University of Washington that she wrote for an academic journal called "The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs." The accusatory title of Barker's article is "Unsettling SpongeBob and the Legacies of Violence on Bikini Bottom."

First they came for Speedy Gonzales, but I wasn’t a mouse so I said nothing...
These people get paid top dollar to do such “research” and write this zhit.
And millions of Americans owe billions in “education debt” as a result.
What a racket!
This stuff is so off the rails that I wind up singing Brain Damage by Pink Floyd when reading this.
That’s a MAN, baby!
Spongebob is an instrument of U.S. hegemony. Boy, do we have some ridiculous people among us.
This reads like something from Radio Moscow in the old days, except the comrades would have laughed this one right out of the room had she brought up this topic. As outrageous as they could be, the old Marxists at least had enough dignity to want to avoid looking like pinheads.
More evidence of the decline of academia - she doesn’t get half of the injustices in the series. Just to pick a couple of obvious ones: the cartoon is grossly unfair to cephalopods, as Squidward Tentacles only has 6 arms instead of 8; and the characters Pearl and Mrs. Puff are clear examples to misogynistic fat-shaming of females as a means of perpetuating underwater paternalism. To think that students are paying $60,000 a year, and they can’t even get a thorough analysis of an important children’s cartoon series.
Have they determined if SpongeBob Squarepants is a real sponge (as an animal that grows in the sea) or a synthetic one (like the cheap sponges for sale in Wal-Mart)? That could have a bearing on this issue.
I get kind of tired of seeing lecturers, instructors, adjuncts identified as ‘professors’ in articles like this.
There is a hair salon every few streets in the Black communities, and guess what is the main requested hair style by Black women? Not only straightening, but extensions. Look at the biggest female stars. Now they also die their hair blond. Why do other races/ethic groups get to put down on whites about cultural appropriation and do the same thing?
The Professor can *dolphin-chirp* off!
Oops, “cultural appropriation” with blonde locks and hippie (white) hair decorations.
Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon.
Can we just close the universities at this point?
Did you pay the $18 to read the whole article?
Another thing: Who’s the owner of the restaurant? Mr. Krabby? Is he a cannibal (by selling crab patties)?
Good point. The university identifies her as a principal lecturer. Not quite the same as a professor.
They were big SpongeBob Squarepants fans and hooked my wife and I on the cartoon. We used to watch the program together so much, we know all of the lines in each episode. It is a cute cartoon and we all loved it.
She is appropriating Hawaiian culture.
