Shepard Smith announced Friday that he will step down as Fox News Channel's chief news anchor and managing editor of the network's breaking news unit.
Smiths final edition of his afternoon program Shepard Smith Reporting aired Friday and the network will use a rotating series of news anchors in the 3 p.m. ET timeslot on what will now be known as Fox News Reporting.
Shep is one of the premier newscasters of his generation and his extraordinary body of work is among the finest journalism in the industry. His integrity and outstanding reporting from the field helped put FOX News on the map and there is simply no better breaking news anchor who has the ability to transport a viewer to a place of conflict, tragedy, despair or elation through his masterful delivery, Fox News president and executive editor Jay Wallace said in a statement.
Smith was one of Fox News Channels original hires in 1996 and has covered nearly every major story for more than two decades.
We are proud of the signature reporting and anchoring style he honed at FOX News, along with everything he accomplished here during his monumental 23-year tenure, Wallace added. While this day is especially difficult, as his former producer, we respect his decision and are deeply grateful for his immense contributions to the entire network.
Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave FOX News and begin a new chapter. After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged. The opportunities afforded this guy from small-town Mississippi have been many. Its been an honor and a privilege to report the news each day to our loyal audience in context and with perspective, without fear or favor.

Ole Miss fairyboy going to become Don Lemon’s Toyboy at CNN.
Dont let the doorknob hit you,.
As much as you may want it too...
“..Its been an honor and a privilege...”
Not for normal people.
If Fox had any brains theyd beg Bill Mitchell to take His slot.
Bill is a true patriot and his analysis of the electoral situation is as good as anyones
He’s perhaps one of the main reasons I didn’t mind cutting the cable here at my home.
Why pay to listen to s-heads like that guy?
I waited a long time to get FoxNews when it first came out. Then as time when by this guy and others simply got worse.
CNBC, MSNBC, the network news...
Who needed it? To hell with them.
By Shep. Don’t let the barn door hit ya...
hasta la vista baby..
Be sure his sin (sodomy) will find him out.
This reprobate piece of detritus with suffer eternal torment in the lake of fire.
Shep Smith... the pride of Oxford, Mississippi.
Maybe Greta Van Sustren has talked him into becoming a heterosexual, she always had the hots for him. Mustve near killed her when he came out floating in his loafers.
Some rumors are already starting to circulate that there is more to the story than just Smith deciding he wanted to leave.
One is that the recent dust up with Smith and Carlson and Napolitano may have been part of the reason.
Sounds like he leaving “journalism” all together. They should give Tammy Bruce his time slot. I’d actually watch FoxNews during the afternoon if they did.
I still remember when he got busted for fighting about a parking place during the 2000 election recount in FL. And were all going to die (and our kids too) during the hurricanes. Good riddance.
Unfortunately Fox will probably hire someone who will make Shep look like Ronald Reagan.
Glad he’s leaving.
He got caught doing something and theyre letting him step down
