This is an urgent message from the County of Santa Clara Office of Emergency Management. The time is 11:27 p.m. (PST, Wednesday October 8, 2019). Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has begun the Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), for areas of Santa Clara County. Your location could be affected and lose power for up to seven days

PG&E is providing a Customer Resource Center that will have charging stations for phones and plug-in medical devices, drinking water, air conditioning, and other amenities. This will be offered at the Avaya Stadium, at 1123 Coleman Avenue, San Jose 95110 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day for the duration of the event. The City of San Jose will also have three resource centers open. Please check their website for more information.

I saw an excellent comment earlier today somewhere. The writer said something like "My mother in Cuba says 'Great - now the wanna-be communists in California can experience the real thing.'"

What an effed-up world we have created. I worked in a number of socialist and communist countries in the early 70s and we often had power and hot water for a few hours a day.

I spent 30 years in the power industry. When I first went into power out of engineering school, regulated utilities had an "obligation to serve" because they were regulated and natural monopolies. Deregulation has created this gigantic mess. The notion of "obligation to serve" is outdated, I guess.

If President Trump is smart, he can point to this ridiculous situation in California and say "This is exactly what you will get from the Democrats running for President."

Hard to see a problem here. Californians have said OVER AND OVER, that they’re willing to SACRIFICE to fight ‘climate change’ - well, now is their chance to PROVE their commitment!

Hard to see why they’re complaining...

This is why I am SO glad I live in Sacramento, CA, where we get our power from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). SMUD doesn't have the sullied reputation of PG&E, and SMUD aggressively promotes solar power in a part of the world where solar power is actually really viable (at where I work, SMUD helped design the huge solar power array installation east of the main office buildings).

"This is exactly what you will get from the Democrats running for President."

No doubt! I'd also be hitting hard on the sorry state of the Rat-run cities. Look at what they did for Detroit and SF, among A LOT of others.

For those people who need medical devices 24 hours per day, I guess they will have to move their bed to Avaya Stadium.

California is so messed up. But then, what do you expect when corrupt and incompetent people have the majority vote and they elect corrupt and incompetent people like themselves to hold political office.

Great comments. California is indeed a corrupt one-party state and it shows—painfully. Socialism = communism = tyranny.

I bet there is a huge run on generators. If I lived in PG&E’s footprint, I would have bought a whole house generator or battery for my solar system months ago.

Yep. Government regulated monopolies are what we should have in every segment.

From what I have read, they are doing this during certain weather conditions to keep lines from blowing down and causing wildfires, right? If that “works,” does that mean they’ll be doing this from now on, or is there another fix for the problem?

I was about to post the same thing, but it’d be inaccurate.
Venezuela would still figure out a way to keep the power, water and such for their chosen, “Special,” citizens.

This is like a movie or book. Atlas Shrugged.

It’s honestly unreal that one of our 50 country/states has gotten this bad.
