Pelosi’s Circular Firing Squad: Impeachment will cost some Democratic seats.
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 25, 2019 | Karl Rove

Posted on 09/26/2019 5:51:18 AM PDT by karpov

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that the House will formally consider President Trump’s impeachment has plunged America into a constitutional crisis.

Mr. Trump smartly released the rough transcript of his July 25 conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It undermines Mrs. Pelosi’s claim (made after the transcript’s release but before she had read it) that Mr. Trump “asked a foreign government to help him in his political campaign at the expense of our national security.” Yet don’t expect the president’s act of transparency to deter Democrats who want him removed from office.

...

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Adam Schiff could also come to regret recent comments. On Saturday Ms. Warren called for Mr. Trump’s impeachment for having “solicited another foreign government to attack our election system.” In a Tuesday fundraising email, Mr. Schiff accused the president of having “pressured a foreign leader to make up dirt on one of his political opponents.”

Both claims are irresponsible. They’re also hypocritical: In 2016 Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign funneled money through a law firm to pay an opposition research firm, Fusion GPS, to hire a British former intelligence agent to reach out to his contacts in Moscow—Russian former intelligence agents—to ask for dirt on Donald Trump. The result was the now-discredited “Russian dossier.”

Neither Ms. Warren, Mr. Schiff nor any other major Democratic leader criticized Mrs. Clinton for “soliciting another foreign government to attack our election system” or inviting Russian intelligence to “make up dirt on her political opponent.”

Mrs. Pelosi knows impeachment is unpopular with voters, especially in the 43 Republican districts that Democrats flipped in 2018. She knows impeachment will drown out all other messages, leaving Democrats without a record of achievement next fall.

A lot of people think we will not be able to re-take the House in 2020. But I think we can. Democrats need to go the way of the Whigs.

Trump’s poll numbers have risen sharply since the last Dem debate, Sept 12.

On 538.com, he’s at the highest approval of the year. On RCP the highest since shortly after inauguration.

I don’t think that many people are going to care about the Ukraine collusion/quid pro quo story. It’s too complex for most people. Agree with Rove.

When you’ve lost Carl Rove, you’ve lost the RINO/moderate democrat base.

Agree.

Once in a blue moon I guess Rove hits a bullseye but it is rare.

The issue is retaking the House majority.

Hopefully the talk of impeachment will enable enough funds to be raised for all the House seats in question that can be flipped back to the Republicans. And the Senate seats can be maintained or even added to.

But we all gotta dig deep for this to happen.

Support your favorite House and Senate candidates!

Start now!

I’m not a WSJ subscriber so I can’t read that all the way to the end, but I presume the finish is “but her rabid moonbat whacko base and her even more whacko group of large donors won’t have it any other way”.

Only Tiny Tim (the singer [?]), I think, has gotten more mileage out of isolated, long-ago achievements than Karl Rove.

His so-called wins were a 538 vote squeaker against Al Freaking Gore and then another squeaker against the Universe’s Biggest Fool John Kerry when Rove’s man was the incumbent.

And all that was 15-20 years ago. Since then he’s spent his time filling the camera frame and stepping on a series of rakes that he places on the ground himself.

His strategy, if you can call it that, is to count his beans and eke out a 51% win. Naturally, his beans told him Trump had no chance.

Agreed. The Russia story was a big nothingburger. Most of the people out there probably don’t even realize that Russia and Ukraine are now two separate countries.

Democrats need to go the way of the Whigs.

For that to happen we urgently need a way to try and reach young people. I deal with a lot of Millenials and it is frightening the degree to which they've bought into socialism as a group. If current trends persist the Grim Reaper will assure a Socialist America in about fifteen years.

What constitutional crisis? The 1 the MSM wants to create to sell fish wrap and boost viewership? I think we as normal folks just go on as we usually do and patiently await our chance to reelect President MAGA Trump.

Look at it this way, Lurker.

Rove is DEFENDING PRESIDENT TRUMP. That’s equal to a surrender of the enemy?????

Not sure what they think there is to gain here. If they impeach, it goes to the Senate where it dies. There is a much better than average chance they lose seats next year, maybe even the House.

This is just cover and distraction for Biden’s crookedness.

“Not sure what they think there is to gain here. If they impeach, it goes to the Senate where it dies.”

I fear there is a much greater than 50% chance that the senate stabs the country in the back

I think this circus has been created so that when RBG dies, the left will say that a President under impeachment proceedings should not be allowed to nominate a SCOTUS justice.

It needs to cost some of them more than their seats. Coup plotters need to be brought to justice and pay a heavy price.

Whoa whoa whoa. Deep state Rove is now saying something good about Trump?

I think more likely explanation is all the “Never Trump” Republican strategists and consultants are finding it very, very hard to get jobs these days

Don’t forget, Steven Breyer is getting pretty old too. Wouldn’t be surprised if we have 2 seats open up in the next couple of years.

Not sure what they think there is to gain here.

You obviously don’t understand the Democrats. They are nuts and actually believe the garbage they spew. I was reading comments on a Hill article about this earlier. They all pronounce that Orange Man is dirty and going to be impeached and go to jail over this. Yep, even after the transcript came out. They see guilt in the transcript.
They are certifiably delusional but believe everything they spew.
