BLM HQ will share a building with oil and gas companies (Oh, the HORROR!)

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Bureau of Land Management is moving its headquarters to an office building in Colorado that also houses oil and gas organizations, drawing criticism from environmental groups.

The building’s other tenants include two oil and gas companies as well as a state oil and gas association. The BLM regulates oil and gas leases and development on the land it oversees.

The Denver Post reports representatives of environmental groups are concerned about the close association between oil and gas interests and the agency.

The DOI says a separate agency, the General Services Administration handled the office space leasing.

Grand Junction got the nod over several other western U.S. cities competing for the new BLM headquarters so they’re pissed. Albuquerque, I believe was one of them, SLC, Utah another (so we probably hear from Mittens), also cities on the front range of Colorado.

Albuquerque is competing with Chicago for deaths by gunfire: Last weekend we had 3, Chicago had 5, and Chicago has over five times the population. The BLM will be safer in Grand Junction.

Tis better to lease existing space than to build another government palace for bureaucrats.

There is not a lot office space that can handle a large govt employee move to the Junction. It’s a spread out city with few high rise buildings so it seems likely that they would go where the major area companies have their offices. Govt bigwigs are not going to reside in a shabby strip mall waiting for their new building to be built.

I wonder if there is an abandoned military base near by that the Bureau of Land Management folks could be REQUIRED to occupy as it is “already a government owned facility.”
