Right-wing factions convened at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem Wednesday afternoon, deciding to establish a "right-wing bloc" headed by Prime Minister Netanyahu, that will work for the establishment of the next government.

It was decided to form a joint coalition negotiations team for all factions in the bloc.

In addition to Netanyahu, the meeting saw the participation of Minister Yariv Levin and faction heads: Yaakov Litzman, Moshe Gafni, Naftali Bennett, Ayelet Shaked, and Bezalel Smotrich.

Minister Aryeh Deri met with Prime Minister Netanyahu earlier this morning, as he was unable to attend the meeting due to the memorial ceremony for the late Minister David Azulay.

This is a tight race, and 10% of the vote still hasn't been counted. So percentages can change.

Why would anybody want to diminish the victory?

It’s not actually a victory.

For now, Netanyahu’s coalition of parties is going to act as one party. That’s good in the sense that the individual parties could be making separate deals with the Gantz coalition to make a Leftist government.

Make up a government from who? Joint List is the Arab parties, isn't it? Yisrael Beytenu is currently in opposition along with Labor. If those three join with Blue and White then they have 60 seats of the 61 needed. Assuming all remains as it currently looks.

Third election anyone?

Clever girl, that Netanyahu.

Israeli politics is one of the most cutthroat forms of government out there and even if you don’t care much about the middle East, it’s fascinating to watch as political gamesmenship.

What it appears Netanyahu did here was latch his party with the religious parties to strengthen his hand in coalition negotiations with the blue and white.

On his own, he couldn’t form a government. With blue/white, likud could form a very stable unity government but Netanyahu would be a plurality partner and likely forced out of the premiership, possibly even tossed from the party list in a rebellion.

The religious parties could have been shut out of the government entirely if blue/white led negotiations and so desired. In theory, if one religious party joined with blue white, likud could have been shut out of power, though this is a less likely scenario given party goals and personalities involved.

If blue/white calls Netanyahu’s bluff and refuses to negotiate from a position of weakness with an already established Bloc of parties, it probably loses its momentum as a political party. If it does negotiate and Netanyahu remains PM or shares the status of PM, it loses its momentum as a political party. It seems more likely today that Netanyahu lives for another day as PM, but his opposition has only been outsmarted, not defeated.

The Left fell to a historic low with only 11 seats. Its effectively been relegated to the fringe.

Israel has two big blocs: a Right and a Center. Israel looks set for a Right-Center government after the elections.

Only real question left is whether a national unity government will be with or without Lieberman who is the coalition kingmaker.

Expect both the Likud and Kachol Lavan to woo him.

Blue and white defeated itself. It can’t have a coalition, according to my count, without the religious parties, and they have only one thing in common, their mutual hatred for each other.

I thought it was over, but then I noticed the vote count wasn’t finished. Wonder if it’ll be honest this time.

It has only 32 seats. The left wing parties won’t join a Likud led government so that weakens its bargaining power. The Arabs are out to their anti-Zionist orientation. Kachol Lavan doesn’t bring the needed level of heft to the table.

The Likud has far more allies but its short of a coalition majority. About five or six seats short depending on what poll you look at.

“Cutthroat” is right. When I was an attorney I had some Israelis for clients. My read is that their geopolitical situation is what makes them absolutely as tough as nails. I love the people of Israel. Spines of steel
