Smallpox and Ebola is housed there oh my. I am not a scientist in the least so I cant even imagine how one extracts and stores a virus.
ACHOO!
(uh-oh)
Well my first thought was maybe the explosion (and fire) burned up any viruses... but after reading it, that is probably very wishful thinking, especially if just big enough to blow out all the windows in the building yet only burn up a small area...
Only from what I have seen on TV shows, but they always show stuff like that stored in glass vials... which just seemed stupid to me on the surface!
A preparation of purified viruses would be mixed with buffers that protect them from ice damage and frozen at -80 C or on liquid nitrogen.
I have never made a virus solution or worked with active viruses; I am assuming that viruses would be preserved in a manner similar to bacteria and cells from multicellular organisms.
We're housing those in Los Angeles.
One can still get smallpox vaccine if a need arises. As for Ebola, after 4 decades of studying therapeutic nutrition and being in good health at 81, I have some thoughts on that disease. The symptoms are those of rampant scurvy. Thus I would suspect that taking massive doses of Vitamin C if ill would help. Also, animals our size produce their own Vitamin C in the amount of 2,000 to 4,000 milligrams a day or 2 to 4 grams a day. I have been taking from 2 to 6 grams a day for 40 years. You have to take it 3 or 4 times a day as your body excretes or uses it rather quickly.
I once helped a woman stung by yellow jackets on her neck who had forgotten her epipen before going camping. When I came upon the camp sites MASH tent her eyes were swollen shut and she was choking. I immediately gave her 10 grams of Vitamin C and in 15 minutes her eyes were open and she had stopped choking. At 1/2 hour I gave her another 5 grams, and her face and body stopped being swollen. I stayed with her for 8 hours and gave her 5 grams every hour. Then I left her with the bottle and said take it as you need it. The next day I went back to check on her and and was told she had walked the 4 mile trail back to her car.
It has been given intravenously in doses as high as 100 and 200 grams a day. For more info, Google: High dosage vitamin C; Intravenous high dosage vitamin C; also a Dr Klenner(?) in the Carolinas used it successfully for snake bite; also a PhD scientist whose name I can’t remember. I am health at 81, but the memory is not as good.
