My niece by marriage is Lumbee. I have met her extended family. They generally look African American but that can vary widely. There was a minister in the family and everybody was very “country” in accent and pace of life. I can definitely see them voting their conscience, preserving their ways.

And there are theories that some of the English colonists from Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke Colony may have intermarried with the Lumbee after they abandoned Roanoke.

I’ve read numerous books on the “Lost Colony” and that theory is explained in detail. As Zhang Fei said, many in the tribe are not interested in DNA testing.
