Why my American Indian tribe voted Republican in NC's special election
The Hill ^ | 09/12/19 | Jarrod Lowery

The result of Tuesday’s special election in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District didn’t take many political analysts by surprise. Republican Dan Bishop was predicted to win the district, which had been in Republican hands since 1963.

But it may surprise analysts to know that my people, the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, proved crucial to Bishop’s victory.

They shouldn’t be surprised. The Lumbee are culturally conservative, church-going and entrepreneurial. And more and more of us are distressed by the leftward lurch of the Democratic Party.

SNIP

Lumbee are educators, ministers, business owners, farmers, soldiers, doctors, engineers, professional athletes and still hold on to the Lumbee way of life through our community and creator. We hold strong to the values of family and hard work. And at the moment, the Republican Party does a better job of respecting those values.

I wonder how many Indians will vote Republican once the Democrats nominate a fake Indian?

Liz Warren is ‘demanding’ that a local representative of the
Lumbee Tribe call her office immediately!
“We need to talk, and YOU need to listen!” is all she wrote.

Robeson is the one thing that scares hell out of the dems - the canary in the coalmine just died.

My niece by marriage is Lumbee. I have met her extended family. They generally look African American but that can vary widely. There was a minister in the family and everybody was very “country” in accent and pace of life. I can definitely see them voting their conscience, preserving their ways.

The Lumbee I know are extremely hard workers and a large number of them work in heavy construction so I’m not too surprised by this.

The media in the next election are going to be microslicing out exit poll groups like “Rural African Americans” or “Frequent Church Attending Hispanics” to figure out why minority groups are becoming less loyal to tbe Democrats.

More Indian-looking than Pocahontas, but not by much:

There's a reason a lot of Indian tribes aren't particularly big on DNA testing.

He’s got those ‘high cheekbones’ and jowls to match.

And there are theories that some of the English colonists from Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke Colony may have intermarried with the Lumbee after they abandoned Roanoke.

I’ve read numerous books on the “Lost Colony” and that theory is explained in detail. As Zhang Fei said, many in the tribe are not interested in DNA testing.

What’s amusing is that John Ross of Trail of Tears fame was only 1/8 Indian. Not a fake Indian like Pocahontas but, without the tribal getup, about as Indian-looking as Keanu Reeves:

I had been told that the Lumbee had a history of taking in escaped slaves and other fugitives, so there was intermarriage going way back.

The Lumbees might be the tribe that the Lost Colony settlers took. The Lumbees been in North Carolina before Raleigh landed...
