The British House of Commons Just Blew Up Over Brexit
Townhall ^ | 09/10/2019

Outgoing House of Commons Speaker John Bercow is not leaving Parliament without yelling "order!" just a few more times. Several of those directives came on Monday as the speaker tried to preside over the latest Brexit tête-à-tête between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Tensions are getting extremely high now that the UK is about two months out from the latest official date when it will finally separate from the European Union.

Parliament is still without a deal, having rejected former Prime Minister Theresa May's agreement with Brussels an historic three times. Meaning, a no-deal Brexit is becoming more and more plausible - and more and more unnerving. On top of that, Johnson suspended Parliament for one month, meaning several amendments will not be debated. Even Bercow lashed out at that decision, calling it "executive fiat."

That brings us to Monday's debate in the House of Commons, where the MPs were arguing over whether or not to hold a snap general election. Corbyn maintains that Labour will only support an election if the no-deal option is taken off the table. As you can see, it was utter chaos.

First Corbyn lambasted Johnson for heading toward a no-deal Brexit despite the protestations of industry and business groups, trade unions, and Parliament itself. He then accused the prime minister of suspending Parliament to "avoid scrutiny."

Johnson, Corbyn charged, is "shutting down democracy" and "taking this country off a cliff" with a no-deal Brexit. Brits may have voted to leave the EU in 2016, but there is "no mandate" for no deal, Corbyn reasoned. Other MPs shouted from their seats that Johnson was a "liar" and a "thug." The Labour leader said he wishes "to tear down this reckless government."

Johnson responded with a few shakes of the head and a question: Why is Corbyn not going to Brussels to negotiate his own deal?

It's a bit quieter across the hall in the House of Lords, but no less tense. I was able to sit in on a debate over a Brexit amendment last week in the parliamentary chamber, and, believe me, the heckling was in full force.

Every Brit I talked to in London last month admitted they don't have a clue what's going to happen come October 31. Judging by what just transpired in Parliament, they're in good company.

As you can see in the British press, there were plenty more outrageous moments where these came from on Monday as MPs openly protested the prorogation of Parliament. Some sang, while others waved signs reading, "Silenced." It was unprecedented.

The UK, as of now, plans to leave the EU, with or without a deal, on October 31. Halloween.

Nationalism is what drove the Irish to insist on no border on the island

“All Hallows Eve” — the last hurrah of evil before “All Saints Day”; the coming of the Holy Ones. How fitting.

I support the UK but will say that the only right thing to do with Northern Ireland is to give it back to the Irish.

The Muslims will take over, eventually, so it's a moot point.

They sang the socialist song 'The Red Flags'

Britain has been taken over much more often.

The Stonehenge builders were not Celts. The Celts who were called Britons and are ancestors of today’s Welsh came around 500 BC

The Roman’s invaded and settled around 44 AD

The Saxons, Jutes and Angles came in the fifth century ad.
At the same time the Scotti, a tribe from Ireland invaded what is now Scotland and set up shop.

Then in the 8th, 9th centuries you had the Danes coming and Danelaw, a part of the Danish Emoire under Canute.

The in 1066 you have the Frenchish speaking Norman’s coming a d that heralded 250 years of domination by French speakers from the Norman dynasty to the Angevin.

That great English king, Richard the Lionheart was born in Francem visited Englamd for only three months of his life and spoke no Englisch.

After that, the Norman batons invited the Fren h prince to come rule them instead of John but that failed.

Then in 1688 basically the Dutch invaded and the Dutch King William of Orange became the king of England.

Before that you had of course the Tudora who were Welsh, the Stuart’s who were Scottish.

And then in the 170ps you had the German takeover with the house of Hanover coming to power. George I spoke no English at all.

Wo this myth of 1000 years is, well a myth

30% of northern Irish people don’t want to be part of the Republic

Excellent points. It was 1000 years of remarkable advancements in all areas of endeavor, with changes in power that did not tear it down. What's happening now, I suspect, will be the demise of any of the greatness that still remains. It'll be a Muslim country or a German/Euro colony.

I've said this before. It's either possible or likely that Will and Kate will be the last British monarchs. Even that's in doubt if things get too crazy.

I’m wondering how many truly British people there are. Is it an irreversibly dying ethnic group?

just because the border question seems to be the biggest issue that is keeping the UK in the EU for so long....basically having to deal with the Irish....classic tail wagging dog here

No border in Ireland then and everyone wins, except the DUP”

just to make sure ....this doesn’t allow EU goods to come into Ireland, cross the border into the North, and then go into the rest of the UK....which sort of “sounds like” the UK is still in the EU?

It means that eu goods go into the republic and with no tariff or customs into northern Ireland.

But if they are to go to the rUK it faces tariffs and customs checks. And vice versa.

So northern Ireland is part of the eu in the same way that the Vatican is part of the eu, I.e legally no and not following the eu law or ecj, but part of the customs union
