“Don’t they get to keep the unspent campaign funds?”

I think they do.

Unspent campaign funds are NOT for personal use after the person is out of office. He can donate to his party's national headquarters, to other party candidates for future campaigns, he can send refunds to his donors...plus just a few other options.

He cannot use the funds for personal expenses that are part of living as an average un-elected citizen......such as college tuition, funeral expenses, mortgages, rent, country club annual dues or for any goofin-around stuff.

Type "Unused Campaign Funds" into your favorite search engine and you'll get the complete run-down.

But there are ways they can launder them to themselves or their family.

"But there are ways they can launder to themselves or their family".

Of course they can cheat. People can cheat at anything. The questions are how good they are at cheating.....and how good they are at the end of their terms at hiding their laundering from all the prying eyes of the feds, state and or/local watchdogs, hostile media investigative reporters, political opponents, nasty neighbors, ex-sons-in-law, whatever.

When I retired from elective office some many years ago, I donated part of my excess funds to local GOP conservative candidates and part to the county Republican headquarters. So did most of my party political peers in various and sundry portions.
