Column: Sen. Ted Cruz and other Republicans in Congress are ignorant about gun laws
Chicago Tribune ^ | SEP 04, 2019 | 5:36 PM | DAHLEEN GLANTON

It is obvious that Republicans in Congress don’t understand America’s gun problem. But Sen. Ted Cruz has taken that ignorance to a new level.

The GOP loves to point out, erroneously, that Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the nation, yet the murder rate is the highest. Neither point is accurate, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans, including Donald Trump, from spreading the lie.

Chicagoans are used to being the scapegoat for lawmakers who don’t have the guts to do the right thing when it comes to passing sensible gun legislation. But when self-serving politicians try to shirk their responsibility by misleading the public about how guns end up in the hands of killers, we have to speak up.

Thank you, Mayor Lightfoot, for shutting down Cruz. We’re fed up with this lying political culture that Trump is breeding in America.

In the aftermath of a mass shooting in Odessa, Texas, just weeks after the one in El Paso, the Texas lawmaker tweeted this on Monday: “Gun control doesn’t work. Look at Chicago. Disarming law-abiding citizens isn’t the answer.”

What he omitted was that both gunmen in Texas obtained their weapons legally. Most of the guns used in homicides in Chicago were obtained illegally. There’s a huge difference. To try to equate the two is ignorant and disingenuous.

Cruz might have exaggerated a little by saying Chicago has THE toughest gun laws and he might have exaggerated when he said they had the highest murder rate, but not much on either point and certainly not enough to alter the conclusions one draws.

Chicago is a perfect example of how gun control laws actually increase murders.

1) Not true. Dems are the ones who think anything above a colonial one shot musket is a military “assault” version of a Tommy Gun in the Untouchables.

2) Even if it were true it would be because he was all sweating and tense over cramming to try keep up with Alyssa Milano for their upcoming debate and didn’t have time to study gun laws./s

2)If you want to come to Chicago and learn about the root cause can have that convo. But enough with this dishonest use of our city as a cheap symbol to cover for the @gop’s unwillingness to protect their constituents.— Lori Lightfoot (@LightfootForChi) September 4, 2019

Mayor, the most significant “root cause” is that criminals have all the guns. One place to start is not releasing back to the public, but rather locking up violent, repeat offenders before they murder again: https://t.co/U2Hyn0CSiH https://t.co/v7PLn0ICnc— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) September 4, 2019

Someone from the Chicago Tribune lecturing on ignorance of gun laws.

That is rich.

The Lady needs to turn her attention to reducing the weekly deaths IN CHICAGO.

She’s a moron. From her TWITurd feed

Illinois’ felony murder law is wrong. Every kid deserves a second chance.

A second chance to kill again.

“Neither point is accurate, but that hasn’t stopped Republicans, including Donald Trump, from spreading the lie.“

Leave it to the Chicago Tribune to sort out the lies from the truth.

Sheesh. Why am I always finding this garbage on Free Republic? Isn’t this supposed to be a repository of the truth?

Is there anyone who can define what a sensible gun law entails? All these pundits keep saying that but I have yet to hear one tell what sensible gun laws are...

some rich American could go into Chicago and just distribute firearms (perhaps with safety training class vouchers, that would be a nice tough) to as many people as possible, so that they can defend themselves, their families, friends, and communities.

yes, I know...
but it would help solve Chicago’s problems

alternative... provide good funding so that high schools and patriotic civic organizations can set up or restore good quality firearms training classes (with shooting sports included)

If she were correct, why do the places where the guns come from have lower murder rates than Chicago?

That shows gun laws are not the problem.

How much did Dahleen’s parents have to pay to get her into journalism school?

Probably attended the same university as Obummer.

“”Most of the guns used in homicides in Chicago were obtained illegally. There’s a huge difference. To try to equate the two is ignorant and disingenuous.””

Oh! my goodness - who is ignorant and disingenuous? So the weapons used in Chicago homicides are illegal therefore they can’t be included in statistics about the number of homicides? I get it - I think. At least I can see why people are stupid enough in IL to vote in the demon-rats that have done so much to “improve” our lives...
