Maine tops ‘safest states’ rankings four years after removing major gun restriction

AUGUSTA – When Maine passed a “Constitutional Carry” law allowing Maine residents to carry a concealed firearm without any special permit in 2015, opponents of the law forecast a dangerous future for the state. They said the new law would hurt public safety and put Maine kids at risk.

One state representative who opposed the bill went so far as to say it would give Mainers a reason to be afraid every time they went out in public or to work.

Another state representative suggested the law would lead to violent criminals with recent arrests and convictions legally carrying handguns.

Putting the rights of Mainers ahead of the objections of opponents, Governor Paul LePage signed the bill sponsored by Senator Eric Brakey of Auburn after it won bipartisan approval in the Maine House and Senate.

Now four years later, Maine has been named the safest state in the nation according to US News and World Report’s public safety rankings, which measures the fifty states based on crime data.

While it may not be a cause it certainly didn't hurt.

The good guys far outnumber the bad guys hence we’re actually better off if everyone is armed.

As per Wikipedia, 2017 homicide rates for these states:

Maine: 1.7 per 100,000 people
New Hampshire: 1.0 per 100,000 people
Vermont: 2.2 per 100,000 people (up from 1.6 in 2014 and 1.1 in 2010)

Neighbouring Canadian provinces for 2016:
Nova Scotia: 1.37 per 100,000 people
New Brunswick: 1.45 per 100,000 people
Quebec: 0.8 per 100,000 people

As one can see, not including the upswing in Vermont (quite possibly from Burlington being a sanctuary city), there is very little difference in homicide rates for constitutional carry states versus the immediately neighbouring Canadian provinces that have the stricter gun control laws.

Expect this to be ignored by every Democrat candidate for anything. Their visceral hatred of the right of citizens to be armed isn't going to be affected in the slightest by facts, logic, or reality. Their reality is an all powerful state with large numbers of armed thugs armed police controlling every action of an impoverished citizenry with the fruits of the labors of the citizens or rather serfs going to support the luxurious lifestyles of the elite ruling class and their wacky ideas about climate change, illegal immigration, reparations, etc. They will fly in private jets. You'll take the bus.

An armed citizenry puts a baseline fear into their dreams of total absolute control

“More Guns, Less Crime”

A corollary: “Fewer Amish, More Safety”

As pointed out by Querty1234 above, it probably has more to do with the diversity element than the gun laws. It’s a great example of white privilege, It’s a privilege not to get shot.

Been going to the far reaches of northeastern Maine, off an on, for the past few years, mostly to get away from the southern summer heat. That area (2nd Congr. District) actually went for Trump. There’s a lot of folks that open carry here as well, and by the looks of em, they wouldn’t be afraid to use em if need be. The area where we stay is very rural with a very low population density. It’s actually an economically-depressed area. There’s just not a lot of “riffraff” living there since it’s 9 months of some tough brutal winter, which can go weeks and weeks without ever seeing the temps get up over zero....and oh...lots and lots of snow. Also, law enforcement in the area appears to be of the old fashion variety....they don’t appear to put up with a lot of BS.
The lower southern part of the state where the rich libs live....maybe not so much.

"The good guys far outnumber the bad guys hence we’re actually better off if everyone is armed."

Excellent observation.

Maybe that's what's fundamentally wrong with Leftists, basic to their mental illness, and the reason they are so angry and filled with hate and fear: They believe that the bad guys outnumber the good guys. No wonder they're so paranoid!

Most people do not realize how large in size and unpopulated Maine is. 90% of the population lives in Portland or within 10 miles of the ocean.
JD Irving owns most of the rest of the state and New Brunswick too.

The economy 10 miles off the coast is forestry related.
Tourism, fishing(lobster)and lumber/paper are the main forces in the economy. With the exception of Sunday River and Sugarloaf the tourism is also very seasonal.

Like most other states in the union, the cities are dominated by the liberal loonies. The rural areas are salt of the earth.
