Trump allies accuse pundits of smearing top court pick: 'Intentional distortion?'

President Trump’s nominee for a seat on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has been vilified in recent days as a racist and misogynist by liberal pundits and organizations -- but conservative allies claim the attacks amount to a smear campaign and a gross distortion of his past writings.

The attacks against judicial nominee Steven Menashi picked up last week with a segment by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, in which the host discussed a 2010 article Menashi wrote for the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law, titled “Ethnonationalism and Liberal Democracy.”

Maddow started off her discussion by comparing the term “ethnonationalism” to white nationalism. “Are you talking about what I think you’re talking about? Oh yes you are,” Maddow said, also claiming that the article “ends with this sort of war cry about how a country can’t work, how definitely democracy can’t work unless the country is defined by a unifying race.”

Menashi’s article does not say anything about democracy requiring that people be of the same race. What the article is about – and what Maddow does not mention – is the reconciliation of liberal democratic ideals with the concept of Israel as a Jewish state. Menashi, who is Jewish and of Iraqi descent, argues that Israel being a Jewish state is no different than other countries establishing a state for citizens of a common origin. While Israel does grant preference to Jews when it comes to granting citizenship, he argues once people are citizens of Israel, they enjoy equal rights regardless of religion or country of origin.

Maddow started off her discussion

There is no one Trump could nominate to the SCOTUS short of a left wing crazy, who would silence these media jackals. They know rhat Ginsberg will likely be dead or resign before next year so the hope they had of stalling Trump’s nomination until after the 2020 election are pretty much gone. I would look for a smear campaign against Trumps nomination that will be even more vicious than that was hurled at Kavanaugh and will likely include riots in the streets. However that could backfire...the Democrats lost ground in the Senate in 2018 I believe due to the general disgust at the Kavanaugh hearings.

Sue them all for slander if what they say isn’t true.

This isn’t even a SCOTUS nominee, but rather a Second Circuit Court of Appeals nominee. So they in reality, object to any & all judicial picks by President Trump.

This appointment will flip that circuit (including New York, where both the Trump Organization and Clinton live) to majority Republican appointees.

Smell the fear.

I don't recall ever seeing her and Anderson Cooper in the same room...

I think it should be “leaked” that President Trump mentioned in a meeting that he’s thinking about nominating Merrick Garland for SCOTUS if the need arises.
It would sure be fun to watch.

That I do not know, however, if they are objecting to his appointment as a Second Circuit Court of Appeals nominee, they will surely have even greater objections if President Trump withdrew his nomination to have him as a SCOTUS appointee at a later date. If I am understanding your question correctly. 8>)

More like Rachel Maddow is possably Anderson Cooper in drag.

Throw on a puffy little black wig, lots of pancake makeup, dark contacts and slightly different fake glasses...

Surprise!

“She is really a HE though.”

I won’t call her a “he” since she was born a “she”.

But I’m fine with calling her an “it”.
