Florida Man Who Fatally Shot Black Man During Parking Dispute Found Guilty

A white man who cited Florida’s “stand your ground” self-defense law after fatally shooting a Black man during a dispute over a parking space last year has been convicted of manslaughter.

Jurors in Clearwater, located roughly 25 miles west of Tampa, deliberated for six hours on Friday before announcing their verdict against Michael Drejka, 49, in the shooting death of Markeis McGlockton, reported the Tampa Bay Times.

Drejka’s attorneys reportedly plan to appeal the verdict after their client’s sentencing hearing, which has been scheduled for Oct. 10. He faces up to 30 years in prison.

The shooting occurred after McGlockton, a 28-year-old father of three, parked in a handicap spot outside a Clearwater convenience store in July 2018 while he ran inside with his 5-year-old son to purchase snacks, according to his girlfriend, Britany Jacobs.

This was the case where the shooter was haranguing a woman and her child for waiting in a handicap parking space. Her spouse came out and shoved him to the ground and then the defendant shot him. He claimed "stand your ground".

What convicted him was the security video. It showed that there was a period of a few seconds where the defendant was on the ground, the victim was not advancing on him, the defendant pulled his pistol, the victim backed away, and he shot him. Clearly a bad shoot and the manslaughter conviction was justified.

The guy’s actions preceding the event tell me that he wasn’t the type who should have been carrying. Way too temperamental and impulsive. The victim, however, tempted fate by physically confronting the guy when clearly he was only running his yap. At least that’s the way I perceive it. Nobody won.

I guess this could be classified as parking lot rage. A cousin of road rage.

Once the perp laid hands on him he surrendered his right to life; the shooter spared other people victimization at the hands of the perp (aggressor).

Putting the race of the person who was shot merely reinforces in peoples’ minds that they can’t safely be around others who don’t look like them; there are citizens, and there are “preferred citizens”...

When I watched the video, it seemed the standing man backed away a step but just before the shot, he began to move forward again.
If the shooter had shot immediately after he pulled the gun, I think he would not have been charged as his attacker was standing right over him.
He who hesitates is lost.

I remember this. It sparked a bunch of ignorant comments about “stand your ground,” including by the sheriff, but Florida’s “stand your ground” law had nothing to do with this. He was not facing a deadly threat, and had in fact initiated the confrontation that led to the shooting. Whether he had a duty to retreat never entered into it.

Or, he(shooter) could mind his own business and not talk shit to strangers.

...

IIRC, he was, as a civilian, policing the handicap spots at this convenience store in a rundown section of town. Why?

The left will use this to try and get rid of “stand your ground” even though it didn’t really have relevance to this situation.

Utter crap. The killer was the aggressor. The victim was protecting his family from him.

As much as I generally despise Dershowitz, do the “Dershowitz” test. Reverse the races. Then what do you think the outcome would be?

"he intiated the confrontation?" Im lost on your reasoning. He was yelling at someone sitting in a car. telling him to shut up or get away from my girlfriend/wife/ child is all that was needed. shoving him to the ground and going in for a swift kick was what got the guy shot.

Bith were agrressors. Ill stand by my statement its a win/win, A loose cannon with a gun and a bully are both off the streets.

it bothers me more the store owner knew thus guy was not fit to carry and the police did nothing about it until he shot someone.. snafu. our hanfs are tied, we can't do anything until he does something.

It's not racist but it must be, somehow...

"A white man (evil white man with gun) who cited Florida’s “stand your ground” self-defense law after fatally shooting a Black man (victim, loving father, devoted husband, kind of guy you see cutting his grass in a Home Depot commercial and all-around good guy, capitalized just to make sure you notice) during a dispute over a parking space..."

I agree with the decision. Shooter error. Lock him up. Sad and unfortunate for both parties but especially for the kid.

An interesting twist on the phrase, “an armed society is a polite society”. If the victim had known the perp was carrying, would he have shoved him?

Agreed. You’ve got to keep your cool when packing heat. His emotions (anger) overrode good judgment.

If one is carrying one should definitely NOT engage in arguments and especially yelling at another man’s wife. And he lied about the guy he shot. He said the man was advancing on him. Just as an aside- If I see someone without a sticker parking in a handicap space It occurs to me that it leaves a regular place maybe a bit closer o the store for me. I get POed not at people appropriating HC spaces but rather at the number of such spaces, most of which are empty if not filled by non HC cars. Watching the people entering and exiting the HC cars makes me wonder if maybe you can get a HC tag on Amazon for $19.99.
