Mark Bennett: I-70 shouldn't remain a road to avoid
The Terre Haute Tribune Star ^ | August 4, 2019 | Mark Bennett

When a school district deems its region’s main thoroughfare unsafe for school buses, that highway’s problems need fixed.

Lots of Wabash Valley residents fear driving on the local stretch of Interstate 70. And with good reason.

Fatal accidents — several involving semi tractor-trailers crashing into stopped or slowed traffic — have become frequent on I-70 between the Illinois-Indiana border and Indianapolis. Accidents along that 68-mile path outnumbered those on the 66-mile portion east of Indy to the Ohio border in 2016 and 2017, according to the Indiana University Public Policy Institute’s statistics. Distracted driving has been cited as a factor in several cases.

Three more fatalities occurred on I-70 west of Indianapolis last month. On Monday, the Vigo County School Corp. announced its buses won’t travel on I-70 “because of the significant number of serious accidents.” The VCSC doesn’t even want drivers to use I-70 to shuttle buses between schools when students aren’t aboard.

Buses must use alternate routes, such as U.S. 40. It’ll take longer, but as VCSC communications director Bill Riley put it, “Keeping our children safe is one of our basic priorities, and recent news tells us that our children will be safer staying off Interstate 70.”

It wasn’t a snap decision. Superintendent Rob Haworth and fellow administrators reviewed the interstate’s safety problems. “We’ve discussed this for a few weeks,” Riley told the Tribune-Star’s Sue Loughlin. “We can no longer ignore the safety issues on I-70. It’s something weighing on all of our minds.”

Such a smart step has been taken before. In 2011, former superintendent Danny Tanoos restricted bus travel on I-70 because of a spate of accidents involving congested traffic around construction zones.

Children’s safety should come first if it’s that dangerous.

...that highway’s problems need fixed....

And proofreading should ALWAYS come first before publishing :)

There was a time when a gaffe like this was VERY difficult to find.

No it’s difficult not to.

I’ve lived next to PA all my life, went up many times above the Mason-Dixon from Western MD all the way over above Baltimore, but never had any idea that they had this language all their own until I met my husband at 35. Completely baffled me a few times. “Ivonics”, anyone?

“No it’s difficult not to.”

You made three mistakes in one sentence. When are you going to start following your own advice?

I70 should have been three lanes each way 20 years ago!

It’s just too bad all those kids actually LIVE on I70 for the buses to pickup!

Now that there is a selective chunk of info!!

What directions?

Average vehicles per mile per hour??

What time of day???

What day of week?

What season?

If we are going to compare apples to oranges; lket's at least place them in the same sized basket.

A whole article built around statistical illiteracy and logical fallacies. So the two different borders have different numbers of accidents, that means nothing. It would be a fluke for them to be the same. I travel to stretch often. 40 doesn’t seem any better.

Mistake is one thing. This is a PA grammar thing - think of it as white ebonics. It’s not an “accent”, it’s an entire screwed-up grammar system. Blamed on Germans but I don’t think that totally explains it.

In PA language, my DH would say the grass “needs cut”. Not “needs TO BE cut”, or “needs cutTING” which would be standard English.

The really bad thing is, I see more people actually TYPING this on line (FR included) never mind speaking it. That is what this is - this guy obviously comes from the zone and puts his poor speech into writing without a second thought.

Oh Gawd. That PA/OH abomination of verbs just can’t even be stifled in writing.

To be or not to be...in Pennsylwania Dutch there is no "to be".

The cat wants out.
The car needs washed.
The grass wants cut.

Both directions - every weekday -
It is a complete mess -seems to be under construction 300 days a year.

Make sure you have been to the latrine before you get on Westbound I 70 or carry an empty bottle.
