Gardner is an obvious phony who votes with the Democrats much of the time. But it won't save him in the next election.
The GOP in Colorado is going down the same declining path as the GOP in California. The Democrats don't need them anymore and don't want them either. There is no longer any point in "reaching across the aisle". The Republicans still try it though.
