CNN Sure Does Use the ‘Ethnic Slur’ Fredo A Lot Cuomo didn’t complain then

CNN came to the defense of anchor Chris Cuomo on Monday night after he erupted at a stranger who called him "Fredo," declaring it to be an ethnic slur on par with the "N-word" against Italian-Americans.

Fredo is a fictional character from The Godfather series who is portrayed as the weakest and least intelligent of the Corleone crime family's brothers.

The controversy began when a man approached Cuomo in public and called him "Fredo." Cuomo reacted by cursing at the man and stated that calling an Italian "Fredo" is tantamount to calling a black person a "n—er."

"No, punk-ass b—es from the right call me ‘Fredo.' My name is Chris Cuomo. I'm an anchor on CNN," Cuomo said. "‘Fredo' was from ‘The Godfather.' He was a weak brother and they use that as an Italian slur—are any of you Italian? … It's a f—ing insult to your people. It's an insult to your f—kin' people. It's like the N-word for us. Is that a cool f—ing thing?"

Cuomo threatened to throw the man down the stairs before others interceded and broke up the argument.

Vice-president and spokesman for CNN Worldwide Matt Dornic responded to Donald Trump Jr. on Twitter for sharing the video of the confrontation.

CNN's viewpoint that "Fredo" is an ethnic slur can be viewed as hypocritical since employees of the network have used the term over the years.

CNN host Jake Tapper has drawn cartoons referencing others using the "Fredo" insult, and commentators Ana Navarro and Rick Wilson referred to Donald Trump Jr. and Rep. Devin Nunes (R., Calif.) by the moniker. Several other guests have also used the term, to no objection to anyone on the air.

CNN also published articles in which the "ethnic slur" was used.

"If Stone and Bannon turn into the 2019 version of Fredo Corleone, the president will face a tough road ahead," CNN legal analyst Paul Callan wrote in January 2019.

"Bachmann? If there was a mob character she resembled tonight it was Fredo from ‘The Godfather.' If she raised her hand one more time to get noticed, Anderson Cooper was going to send her out on a fishing boat," Roland Martin wrote in October 2011.

Via Sean Davis:
Devin Nunes was referred to as “Fredo” on CNN in March. CNN’s David Gregory compared @DonaldJTrumpJr to “Fredo” in February. And in January, CNN’s Ana Navarro referred to @DonaldJTrumpJr as “Fredo”...to Cuomo on his own show.https://t.co/qOPmnyu7jL— Mark R. Levin (@marklevinshow) August 13, 2019

Frederico “Fredo” Corleone is the second son of Vito Corleone (Marlin Brando in Godfather I and Robert De Niro in Godfather II) in Mario Puzo’s novel Godfather, and Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptation. “Fredo” was played by the highly acclaimed character actor John Cazale.

Fredo is not as strong and not as intelligent as his brothers Sonny (James Caan) and Michael (Al Pacini), or as the family’s adopted son Tom Hagan (Robert Duvall). Because of his weakness, “Fredo” is relegated to nominal positions in his family’s gangster organization. Because of his jealousy of his brothers, he is doomed to failure.

The term “Fredo” refers, then, to a member of a powerful family or other social unit that isn’t as strong or as bright or in some other ways not up to the level of the other members of the family.

But is the term racist?

According to Chris Cuomo, the not so bright member of the Cuomo family, calling him “Fredo” is racist. Chris Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo, born of immigrants to this country from Italy, was Governor of New York from 1983 to 1994. Prior to that, he was a U.S. Congressman representing a district in Brooklyn. I was back then one of his constituents. Chris Cuomo’s older brother, Andrew Cuomo, is the current Governor of New York. As for Chris Cuomo, he’s some kind of a jerk at the laughing stock of a news network CNN. You figure it out.

Until Chris Cuomo got tagged with being “Fredo”, calling other people (meaning calling Republicans) “Fredo” wasn’t racist. It was just good fun. Remember, it’s never racist to call other people (who are Republicans) names. That is just good fun.

As to whom among the Republicans got tagged with “Fredo”? Check it out (all of the following items are from prior to the current “Fredo” controversy, some of the links may be scrubbed in the next few days). Remember, none of the following is racist. It’s just good fun.

“Cuomo threatened to throw the man down the stairs before others interceded and broke up the argument.”

Why was he not arrested for assault?

Notwithstanding contemporary usage, the "n" word is one of the more hateful, nasty, and void of love for fellow man slurs around.

To equate Fredo with the "n" word is a disgrace to all blacks who've been on the receiving end to bigotry.
