China won't let U.S. Navy ship dock in Hong Kong amid trade tensions

HONG KONG — China has denied a request for a U.S. warship to visit Hong Kong, American officials said Tuesday.

The incident came amid rising tensions between Beijing and Washington over tariffs and follows the U.S. last week imposing sanctions on China after it bought arms from Russia.

The USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, had been due to make a port call in the former British colony of Hong Kong in October, diplomatic sources told Reuters.

"The Chinese government did not approve a request for a U.S. port visit to Hong Kong by the USS Wasp," a spokeswoman for the U.S. consulate in the city said.

"We have a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect that to continue," she added.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang did not directly answer a question on whether China had denied the request.

"For requests for U.S. military ships to visit Hong Kong, China has always carried out approvals case by case, in accordance with the principle of sovereignty and the detailed situation," he told reporters, without elaborating.

Yeah, that is obvious. They really don’t want US Servicemen caught up in the military action coming. Jeez.

The 12,000 plus People’s Liberation Army that is deployed inside Hong Kong financial district and other key areas— armed and ready to shoot the protesting Freedom Loving Free China Patriots===

THAT might have something to do with it. The assault amphibious ship could be used to evacuate US citizens who would also be shot. Pray for the Hong Kong people. And curse the idiot Brits for ever giving this up to the chi-coms.

Yes and I'm sure the demonstrations and the crack down and the hordes of riot police had nothing to do with the cancellation.

Why would we want to have our naval vessels in Hong Kong at *any* time?

I suspect that in a few days there will be a whole lot of carnage in Hong Kong. The PLA will have its way easily and excessively because the people have no guns.

Don’t know why it needs to be said, but, Communist China is an enemy of the United States.

President Trump should bind up the ChiComs by threatening to remove China's illegal artificial island bases in the South China Sea if they violently suppress the Hong Kong demonstrations. Then if the ChiComs attack Hong Kong the removal of the basis will be a tit-for-tat response and will be much easier to defend politically.

If the ChiComs savage Hong Kong then America can bomb the island's out of existence while tormenting rebellion in China's provinces. If the ChiComs then retaliate before they are ready (they are not yet ready to tackle the US military) then we can shut down all trade with them and begin enforcing a naval blockade using aircraft carrying anti-ship missiles to choke their ports.

You could be correct. Avoidance of collateral damage with possible world-wide implications.

They should go dock at Kaohsiung Taiwan, then.

But we won’t be that bold.

“Didn’t the Brits sell them out like decades ago?”

Yes.

It really is the Brit’s fault.

Our Marines and Sailors don’t need to be there on liberty right now. There are plenty of liberty ports in the area that are better than Hong Kong. Singapore, Phuket, just to name a couple. I liked Singapore more than Hong Kong.

It was a 99 year lease agrement signed with the Manchu Emperor. The British were honoring their lease contract.

It was a 99 year lease agreement signed with the Manchu Emperor after the Opium Wars. The British were honoring their lease contract.
