Gondola cable cut in Canada, sending cars crashing to the ground in 'deliberate act,' police say

Several gondola cars came crashing to the ground early Saturday in British Columbia after someone apparently cut the cable, according to Canadian officials.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a news release that employees at the Sea to Sky Gondola noticed a cable down and saw several gondolas on the ground around 7:00 a.m. After an initial assessment of the situation by employees, the RCMP was contacted and are currently treating the incident as "criminal in nature."

The popular sightseeing attraction is located in Squamish, British Columbia, about 40 miles north of Vancouver. The attraction gives guests a 10-minute ride, rising to over 2,900 feet above sea level and "provides sweeping views of the Howe Sound and surrounding mountains."

Each gondola car can carry up to eight people, and feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The RCMP said Saturday they are working with Technical Safety BC and the gondola's manufacturer, Doppelmayr, in addition to walking the gondola line so that it can be properly inspected. Authorities are also asking anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time to contact them.

The RCMP said that they are looking to speak with hikers, climbers and campers who were in the areas of the Sea to Sky Gondola as well as the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park between 4:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Millions of people ride them without incident.

You have to have a certain amount of faith. We all have to when we ride in vehicles, buses, trains, boats, ships, and aircraft.

There are countless rides and attractions around the planet, where people have to use faith to ride and enjoy themselves.

Some people have a problem doing some of these things, but if you think it out rationally, your chances are very good in nearly all instances.

Horrible.

I hope they get the guy who did it and convict him and shoot him or put him in the electric chair.

Apparently they fell during the night while it was not in operation.

I have been on the Peak to Peak gondola from Whistler to Blackcomb Mountain three times. One time was on the silver one which has a glass bottom.

A very beautiful ride. It is the longest stretch of cable in the world.

It said they got an alert at 4:30AM that a haul rope was down and noticed the gondola’s down at 7AM. My guess is the local Amish cut them overnight, maybe not all the way thru, hoping the balance of the cable would snap once passengers got on board, but they probably cut too much and the weight and wind finished the job after the Amish left.

Like really dude? Since they were obviously cut in the middle of the night (per the article by the way) and not noticed until around 7:00 a.m. (again, per the article), It's perfectly logical that no one saw the vandalism.......

Either that or the hundreds of people hanging around the base departure or summit at that time of night ain't talking......./s

Another act of violence by Eco Terrorists.......

This particular one has fantastic views and is worth the rather high price.

yeah, done the same. kind of un-nerving but spectacular.

also done the cable to the top of Matterhorn. that one lands at a big hole cut thru a rock pinnacle. that one is really scary.

IIRC there is no “local Amish” in that area.

*****

100%

I LAUGH at American Freepers who keep saying canadians, especially BC folks are “not” anti American.

Vancouver makes San Fran look like Reagan’s home. Anyone remember the 2003 Iraq War? EVERY STREET they were burning American flags EVERY WEEK for the next 8 months. I remember it vividly...
