Hmmm...I'll bet traffic is a lot more than 40 percent higher now than "years ago".
It has been a few years since I have been to Germany. When I was there the Autobahn had variable speed limits near Stuttgart. If the highway is clear you can stomp on the gas pedal if you so desire..
The interstates were designed for 70 miles per hour. Are was it 75?
If they’re not capable of driving the interstate, they should stay off them. As simple as that. The interstate was designed for high speed traffic. There are arterials designed for lower speed traffic. US 25 comes to mind.
Cause on a lot of the back roads in Kentucky you have to slow down to 25MPH to navigate the curve.
In the words of Harry Truman, so damned dangerous it’s safe.
Does it run next to the GM Corvette Manufacturing Plant?
Doesn’t that area also suffer from dense fog; clear one minute then suddenly dense fog?
I-75 used to be posted 70 mph in this area. I’m not sure what speed it was designed for, but likely 75 mph. TOne golden rule is that you do not reduce a speed limit during construction without a geometric constraint (introducing curvature via, temporary walls or barricades, lane shifts, lane drops, or other means) that causes a driver to want to drive slower. Reduced speed signage is insufficient to do that and results in higher accident rates because drivers are comfortable driving at the higher speeds without the geometric constraints. Years ago, it was comfortable to drive this stretch at 85 mph in light traffic, and whole platoons of traffic would travel at this speed. So attempting to artificially reduce the regulatory speed by lowering the speed limit through signage only can be the basis of a higher accident rate.
Maybe we should red flag these drivers????
...Or at least direct them to drive my place every once in a while..................
Love the Kentucky backroads, just takes a lot longer.
Nearly all of the System would consist of divided highways with four or more 12-foot lanes. In flat country where drivers can see great distances, two-lane highways would be permitted if 1975 traffic was not expected to exceed 5,000 vehicles. The roadway would be built to one side of the right-of-way so an additional pavement for a divided highway could be constructed when needed. The highways would be designed for speeds of 50 mph in mountain terrain, 60 mph in rolling terrain, and 70 mph in flat terrain. Bridges and overpasses would be built without overhead obstructions, but all structures would allow at least 14 feet of vertical clearance over the roadways and shoulders.
I drove on the autobahns in the 60’s in my VW beatle. 65 mph about my average while Benzes,BMW’s etc passed me like I .was standing still. No horns when passing either just flashing your lights. Very few accidents but when there were they were dooseys.
The Germans have admirable lane discipline.
... because people don't bother to slow down for construction zones.
It’s especially bad in the fall when the cootsters head south on I-75 in their RVs, fifth wheels, etc.
Amen! I recently went to Charleston and from Spartanburg to Charleston the left lane was jammed with people who if you were lucky would go the exact speed limit and by the Eternal would not give up that lane if it meant a free ticket out of the flames of hell. I believe I passed more cars from Columbia to Charleston in the right lane than anywhere I have driven in the US with the exception of going to the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
My wife and I renamed the interstate between Columbia and Charleston the Highway of Death because we counted a good 20-30 cars on the shoulder abandoned or pulled over with car trouble. The only thing missing was them being torched and A-10’s buzzing us!
No, no, you are just being silly now.
We have to ban ACCIDENTS, and stop this deadly problem once and for all!!!
A few weeks ago I was on I-95 near Richmond, VA. I was doing low to mid 80s in the middle lane. Got passed on the left by a Smart Car scooting up the highway. I chuckled to myself, wow, talk about living on the edge...
Saw a video of head-on crash testing smart car vs SUV. Should be mandatory viewing before taking ownership.
