DOT’s $2B I-81 proposal, decade in making, names end date. Wait for it...

Syracuse, N.Y. – The discussion and analysis about the future of Interstate 81 has gone on for a decade.

When will the $2 billion project be done? Well, we may be nearly halfway there.

One estimated end date is 2030.

That’s from a two-sentence section within the 15,000-page draft environmental report that the state released in late April, according to a review by syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

“Year 2020 was the year of estimated time of completion when the analysis was started a few years ago. However, due to schedule changes, the estimated time of completion is projected to be 2030,” the report says.

You read that right -- the state estimates we could have another 11 years to go.

A state spokesman warns against reading that 2030 date as a firm projection for the end of construction. Rather, Joseph Morrissey says, it’s a time marker used for engineers to study things like traffic patterns and pollution.

“The dates included in the preliminary report are not final construction timelines and are solely used as a basis for comparison of the impacts of the different alternatives being studied,” Morrissey said in response to questions. “Actual construction completion will be determined once we are further along in the formal process.”

In the early years of the I-81 project, engineers compared three main time markers to analyze traffic patterns, noise and other factors in the project:

The construction of the highways around Scranton went on for at least 40 years, I know from personal observation. I think it’s finished, or mostly finished, at this point. Started in the mid-1970s, if not earlier.

I was on a tour of Hoover Dam out of Vegas many years ago and the bus driver on the tour told a story to all the passengers. At the time the expressway out to the dam and the new bridge that was still under construction was still only about 11 miles, about a mile or two short of the dam. That ~12 mile section of highway had been started 18 years earlier and the bus driver confidently predicted it would finish that last mile in 2 years.

How did he know? Because every highway project was a 20 year retirement plan for all the state workers involved. Criminal yet so true.

side comment. I have driven across the country 9 times. I would be going along and then the interstate would have a curve.

A few years ago I read, they put curves into the highways at various points to stop enemy planes from using the interstate as landing strips.,.

That’s why Luxembourg has never attacked us.

They can’t handle curves.

but I love luxumburgers with pickle and a little cole slaw.

I have been to over 40 countries and music of Western Europe. We were in Dusseldorf at a friend’s and booked day bus trip to Luxembourg. Got a call that night, cancelled due to lack of interest. i suggested take van instead. no dice. Never got to Luxumbourg. If they have an air force maybe I can hitch a ride.

In Orlando we have the I-4 Ultimate Project where they are putting in a toll road in between the existing road for those able to afford it, since the toll cost to drivers is based on usage at a given moment.

It’s way behind schedule (surprise! unexpected!), way over budget and 3 or 4 construction workers have been killed.

Local politicians sent off a strongly worded letter to the construction company.

I am voting no federal funds for an interstate which doesn’t go into a second state.

And it is STILL a crappy interchange, not much better than when you had to get off the highway altogether to go from I-84 to I-80, which I used to do in the early '80s.
