We had a rule in our troops and council - you had to have a Son in Scouts to be a Troop Leader. Once your Son was finished in Scouting you had to leave. No 40 year old single guys were allowed. That was 30 years ago. Not sure if we could enforce that rule today.

The Boy Scouts of America national organization should not be responsible for the behavior of the leaders of individual troops or intermediate organizations of troops.
The parents of the kids should bear that responsibility.
If a given troop wants to allow girls, fine. If another doesn’t, fine.
With the internet, groups of troops with similar ideas on how a troop should be run can give themselves a name and have their own set of requirements for membership.

You are on the right path. Corporate America is to blame. The boardrooms were infected with diversity training in the late '80s through now. A major player in that was the HRC - Human Rights Campaign which was founded in 1980. I was forced to endure diversity training in 1995 at my place of employment while a volunteer member of a local BSA council's executive committee. I remember that a session on homosexuality was part of the 3 day program.
The advanced training program for volunteer scouters is called Wood Badge. Its new version in 2000 debuted with a course session on diversity.
Fast forward to JAN 2013. The volunteer national BSA executive committee (~27 officers who were a cross section of execs in the Fortune 500) was meeting a BSA national HQ in Irving, TX, making plans to unilaterally declare membership would be opened to openly homosexual members. The word leaked out and they had to go into damage control mode. They fashioned that national survey for volunteers back in MAR-APR 2013 to be ready for the annual national business meeting in MAY. They got the results they wanted and that was that.

2. volunteer national XB VP Randall Stephenson, CEO AT&T (who went on to become BSA president 2016-2018

In a recent issue of Boy’s Life, the monthly magazine published by the Boy Scouts, the cover article was about girls’ soccer—something that would have been unthinkable back when I was a Boy Scout.
They wanted homosexual scout leaders. they got them — and all that comes along with it.
Oh stop it. My abuser liked little girls from 3 - 15. It is a myth that a Pedo only chooses one age.

Abuse happened as far back as forever. And anyone who was abused many decades ago was often disbelieved. No way would Papa / Uncle Sol / Father Benjamin do this! And the abuser would threaten the lives or health of the child and his family, and no kid was told that there were adults who would do this, or that adults who did it were sick and evil, and one should tell an adult or even the police. Most blamed themselves or were told by the abuser that it was their fault.
That sounds like a good rule, EC. If the leaders are fathers, that should keep pederasts out of the picture.
I recall scouting as a good experience which built teamwork and friendships. Mom was a Den Mother, and Dad was an occasional volunteer.
But consider the source for this story... NBC and The “Abused in Scouting lawyers”. Activist lawyers and MSM media are not interested in preserving these traditionally wholesome and “morally straight” activities in today’s age of #MeToo questionable allegations and celebration of victimhood.
I think these files are from before the Scouts gave up on the gay fight.

I was lucky and was able to come through it unscathed, but many of my friends did not. And you are right because that was the case, that’s how it was, no one would even talk about it or discuss it so then it never happened. I think it is still this way, It was and is more common than anyone will admit or discuss.

I was talking to my friend’s mother and she was abused by a family member but no one she told believed her or took her side. And all the FReepers who say it didn’t happen back then only are saying it didn’t happen to THEM. I bet a lot of over 60 people were molested but had no support to deal with it, and maybe didn’t even understand that it was abuse. And they sure didn’t tell their friends for fear they would be called gay or made fun of or something.
