Mexico calls for protections for Mexicans in US following El Paso shooting

The Mexican government on Sunday demanded protections for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans living in the U.S. following the deadly shooting in El Paso, Texas.

“We consider this an act of terrorism against the community of Mexico,” Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard said during a press conference, signaling that Mexico’s prosecutor might make that designation official.

Designating the incident as an act of terrorism would “permit Mexico access to all the information related to the case,” and “let us evaluate whether there are other individuals involved or potentially involved” that could put Mexicans at risk, Ebrard explained.

He also indicated that Mexico may seek to extradite the alleged gunman on charges of terrorism.

“The Attorney General will evaluate requesting, if necessary elements are there, the extradition of the author or the authors of this action.”

The mass shooting left 20 people dead and 26 others wounded. Ebrard identified six Mexicans who were killed in the shooting on Twitter and seven others who were injured.

Patrick Wood Crusius, the alleged gunman, drove eight hours from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to El Paso, which is directly across the border from Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez and has a high concentration of Hispanic people.

Crusius allegedly wrote a racist, anti-immigrant manifesto before the attack, which described fears of a Latino “invasion."

Ebrard said Mexico would request information from the U.S. about how the weapon used in the attack was acquired by the shooter.

“We consider the issue of arms to be crucial,” he added.

While several American politicians have drawn comparisons between the motives of the El Paso shooter and President Trump’s immigration rhetoric, Ebrard and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador have avoided referencing Trump.

Despite building his career as a staunch progressive, Lopez Obrador has agreed to several of Trump’s demands to crack down on immigrants traveling through Mexico to the southern border.

He could ask Mexicans to return to Mexico where they'll be safe from hate and gun violence.

Boom! Problem solved.

It's not uncommon for American officials to warn Americans from travelling to violence riddled countries or suggest they shorten their stays if they're already there. Whoa! Check it out. I used all three versions of their, they're and there. Did I leave any out?

Do you think Mexican prisons are better than US prisons?

Mexican nationals in the USA, legal and illegal, need to return to Mexico immediately.

America is not safe.

How ironic would it be, if all of the profound misery caused by this weekend’s shooting in El Paso, resulted in illegal aliens being dissuaded from wanting to come to America?!

Just hope this doesn’t lead Mexico’s government to withdraw the troops they have stationed both at our southern border as well as their respective border with Guatamala, etc.

After all, they have been much more helpful than the RATS.

very simple way - seal the entire border TIGHT noone in or out

militarize the border against terrorists and smugglers and illegal crossings

OK mexico that will certainly fix this and so many problems all at once

seond repatirate all mexican citizens in usa to their home country to get them out of harms way

yes GOOD IDEA Mr Mexico

This from the country with more murders than any other...

Cartel-Ravaged Mexico Sets a New Record for Murders

Mexico experienced a record number of murders for the second year in a row in 2018, with official statistics logging 33% more killings than in 2017, Reuters reports.

Mexican authorities opened 33,341 murder investigations in 2018, the highest number ever, the country’s Interior Ministry reported Sunday. The figure outpaced even last year’s toll of over 25,000, which was then the highest number since the record began in 1997.

Mexicans would be a thousand times safer in South Chicago on a dark night than anywhere in Mexico, Senor.

“We consider this an act of terrorism against the community of Mexico,”

Now that is an interesting take. We have all been told that illegal Mexicans should be given amnesty to become citizens of the United States.

That illegal Mexicans are good Americans.

How is it that Mexico still has power and authority over them?

Is the Mexican government setting up the structure to intervene in American national life, to become supreme, because Mexicans are here?

Sure Marcelo. How about this: We’ll assign armed guards to protect them all the way back to your loving embrace, and the safety of their own lands.

Does that work for you?
