(CNN)Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló is expected to resign Wednesday after more than a week of protests that rocked the island's capital city, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

Thousands have jammed the streets of San Juan calling for the governor's resignation after Puerto Rico's Center for Investigative Journalism published a series of group messages between the governor and his inner circle that included homophobic and misogynistic language and jokes about Hurricane Maria victims. Demonstrators were determined to stay on the streets until Rosselló stepped down, fed up with years of government corruption, high poverty rates, crushing debt and a painfully slow recovery since the 2017 disaster. Overnight Wednesday, an energetic crowd filled the streets outside the governor's mansion waving flags and banners after news of the governor's anticipated announcement broke.

The Governor stated yesterday that he wanted to meet with Trump because Trump called him "a horrible governor".

That's cute -- he wants to meet with DADDY!

If only there was a, you know, airport or something like that, with planes which have regular service that goes to the mainland with a connection to Washington D.C...

Nahh, pretty sure that’s too complicated.

Puerto Rico has about $75B in bond debt. I don’t think they can even pay the interest. This was a big issue a couple years ago, but don’t see much about it anymore. I guess the US taxpayer is taking care of it now. Puerto Ricans should be eating grass by now. As long the US taxpayer keeps covering for them, they think their government is just fine. I’ve read the PR retirement system is bankrupt also. I imagine the US taxpayer will get this shoved down their throats also.

He didn’t sound ready to resign in an interview on foxnews with the gay guy. Just woke up - can’t think of his name.

Ricardo was rambling on about how things will be fixed so this doesn’t happen again

Turd world countries are poor and miserable because their “leaders” are corrupt and get rich off the aid they get from a$$holes who feel sorry for them.

all dictators and strongmen who hurt their countrymen should be given directly to the people for a fair reckoning.

Like Mussolini and Nicolae Ceausescu, the violent death of strongment who go against their people and harm their countries sends a message to other leaders to step carefully and to serve in their leadership role.

No, we in PR are now stuck with an 11.5% sales tax for the next forty years to pay that off.
