If the FEC testified in court that Edwards had personal, not political, reasons for his payments, then the same standard would apply to Trump over something much less drastic.
The Edwards campaign finance chief Fred Baron said in 2008 that no campaign funds were used to make payments to Reille Hunter. However, at trial the wife of another aide testified that she believed Edwards knew about the hush money.
The bottom line is that Trump is alleged to have had an affair, while Edwards is known to have brought a child into this world. Why was Edwards' payments not illegal but Trump's payments are illegal?

Unless I’m missing some nuance portion of the law, paying somebody to shut up isn’t a crime UNLESS the witness was witness to an actual crime. Having an affair isn’t a crime in any of the Fifty states.

The campaign finance allegations fell apart, so they are turning to more smears.....just like every time they fail to nail Trump.
There was nothing illegal about getting an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) with Stormy and paying her for it.
This was not a campaign finance violation and the matter is settled.

Let them bring it up again. If it’s being touted as a crime then congress has some explaining to do with the millions in tax payer cash paid out in hush money. And if they don’t disclose who was involved that would be aiding and abetting.
