Trump says US won't sell F-35 jets to Turkey, blames Obama for country's Russian missile system purchase

President Trump has announced that the U.S. is going to halt sales of its F-35 stealth fighter jet to Turkey because the country received a new missile defense system from Russia – an exchange he claims was spurred by actions from the Obama administration.

Trump, speaking during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, suggested the U.S. ended up in this scenario as a result of the past president’s administration imposing too many conditions for Turkey to purchase the U.S.-made Patriot missile system, an alternative to the Russian S-400 system they recently obtained, according to The Wall Street Journal.

U.S. officials previously have expressed concerns about Moscow’s potential intelligence gathering if Turkey came to be in possession of both the advanced American aircraft and the Russian missile-defense technology.

POTUS is right. Allowing Russian tech reps to rub shoulders with the Turkish military while giving Turkey advanced fighters is a recipe for disaster. Plus the fact that we lost Turkey when the General Staff was purged some years ago. They were the only thing that was keeping the country a secular democracy. Too bad... Izmir was a good assignment years ago.

Or work a deal where Turkey can purchase F-35 knockoffs from China. I am sure that will work out well.

Turkey is licensing the S-400 and S-500 systems for manufacture - they are also looking into the same deal for the SU-57

All we need is for a country to be flying F35 on a regular basis through airspace covered by the Russia’s most sophisticated air defense system

Perfect way to learn how best track and destroy the F35

Pssst! The S-400 was developed in Russia which is a cold climate. In the desert the Gallium Arsenide computer chips overheat and melt due to high temps. Don’t tell nobody!

Hey Turkey, F.U.

What could go wrong giving a jihadi country advanced stealth aircraft as they have enemy radar/missiles installed ? I mean, the turks can let the russians check the tech and provide test flights to tweak the s400 radar to detect the stealth capabilities.

I know, my bad calling a nato ally a jihadi country, but that's what they are. Hopefully their nato days are numbered.

Couldn’t agree more. The minute he successfully purged the General Staff we should have thrown them out.

Turkey is and has been our enemy since the first Gulf war when they refused to allow over flights and it caused many U.S. military deaths.

The overflights were transport from Germany to Saudi Arabia. The shortest route is over Turkey. We shifted west, but that did not cause any deaths.

When the Iraqis started launching Scuds against Israel, we convinced the Turks that they were next. So, they went along with us launching anti-Scud missions from the Incirlik air base.

The biggest obstacle Turkey put up is that initially, our military planners wanted to land an infantry division in Turkey and position it along the Northern Iraq border. That division was already floating around in the Med Sea. Turkey refused. I would think the first gulf war would have proceeded differently, especially for the Kurds, with an infantry division in the north.
