Instead, the homeowner should call the cops, and the cops should arrive and find the homeowner dead, with no guns in his hands. The cops should arrive and find the robbers alive and healthy and untouched, ready for 25 years in prison. The mobile home where the shooting occurred is on a 20-acre lot with dense woods and a single-lane dirt driveway. The distance from a gate to home is roughly 300 yards.
Use 1 3/4" "home defense" shotshells in a Kel-Tec KSG dual-magazine bullpup. Twenty rounds or so of No.1 buckshot should take care of it.

Your understanding of overpenetration risk, vis a vis buckshot and .223, is exactly backwards. Much testing has been done, the results are clear.

I’ll go with that except the green tips. Over-penetration in a residential environment is... not good. The shooter needs to be shooting up or shooting down at his attackers to avoid collateral victims. Good for shooting thru walls though so it would probably win the home invasion challenge.
Like everything, it all depends. FMJ drywall penetration is always a concern, but personal defense ammunition is designed with this in mind. The majority of police cruisers in the US probably have an AR in the trunk and most are probably loaded with personal defense ammunition. The police are concerned with whatever might be on the other side of a wall, too. (When considering the purchase of a tool, I look to what the "experts" in the field choose.)
There are multiple tests of ammo versus drywall available online and on YouTube. Buckshot penetrates drywall very well.

Get rid of that ****** ammo. Use some quality soft points in 62 grain or heavier, preferably over 70 grains if your rifle will stabilize it. The only thing green tip is good for is reusing the brass to put a proper self defense bullet in it.
