According to the Quran and the words of the leaders of the muslim religion, he was a heretic. Jihad - the violence designed to impose islam by the sword - is required of every muslim, according to their hadiths.
Some muslims, like every other population in the world, are wonderful people. However, it is worth remembering that, according to their own rules, they are required to wage violent war against non-subjugated adherents of other beliefs.

I worked with a Structural Engineer who was a devout muslim. He was quite brilliant. Certain times of day he would go off to some corner to pray.
Not long after 9/11 he quit and disappeared.
