Taxing tampons isn’t just unfair, it’s unconstitutional
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 11, 2019 | Erwin Chemerinsky & Jennifer Weiss-Wolf

If the government were to require that only men or only women had to pay a tax of several hundred dollars a year solely because of their sex, that would be an unconstitutional denial of equal protection under the 14th Amendment. Yet that is exactly the effect of the so-called tampon tax.

Uhmmmmm......

Even an 8% sales tax = $6.50 in tax per year. Where does this hundreds of dollars figure come from????

Or for hygienic purposes. Then too, how do they get around electrical products such as male and female plugs and receptacles?

My goodness! If I had known that men weren’t charged tax on such products, I would have sent my husband to buy them for me during all those years I needed them. Dang, the little secrets they don’t tell you until you’ve gone through menopause.

This is a joke, right? I mean I know the LA Times is a joke but to stoop to this level to demand “equality”? OMG! Let’s count the ways how guys get screwed over.

How about when a woman wants to get an abortion?

The 1970s?? Now I'm no expert on such matters (being a man and all), but you are off by several decades...
But it wasn’t until 1929 that a physician named Dr. Earle Haas patented and invented the modern-day tampon (with applicator). He came up with the idea during a trip to California, where a friend told him how she was able to improvise a more comfortable and effective alternative to the commonly used and bulky external pads by simply inserting a piece of sponge on the inside, rather than outside. At the time, doctors were using plugs of cotton to staunch secretions and so he suspected a compressed form of cotton would absorb just as well.

After a bit of experimenting, he settled on a design that featured a tightly bound strip of absorbent cotton attached to a string to allow for easy removal. To keep the tampon clean, the cotton came with an applicator tube that extended to push the cotton into place without the user having to touch it.

Haas filed for his first tampon patent on November 19, 1931, and originally described it as a "catamenial device," a term derived from the Greek word for monthly. The product name “Tampax,” which originated from “tampon” and “vaginal packs,” was also trademarked and later sold to businesswoman Gertrude Tendrich for $32,000. She would go on to form the Tampax company and begin mass production. Within a few years, the Tampax arrived on store shelves and by 1949 appeared in more than 50 magazines.

Gender’s just an abstract concept. If you don’t like the tax, change your gender.

During the Civil War, one of the accoutrements for the Springfield and Enfield rifled muskets was the "tampion," (or "tompion"), a wooden or cork plug inserted into the muzzle to keep water and dirt out of the barrel.

Women purchase condoms. I did. Granted, they go on the man, but have a purpose to both sexes. Tampons do not. They are woman-specific, and already expensive.

After my hysterectomy, I donated all of my sanitary items to an organization in the UK. Over there, school nurses, clinics, and hospitals do not provide them in machines, and hospitals charge a ridiculous amount for them. They’re subject to a 12% tax due to being a “luxury item”. They were necessary for me. I was having transfusions on a regular basis, which are awful for transplant recipients.
