U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) crew members board a self-propelled semi-submersible suspected drug smuggling vessel (SPSS) June 18, 2019, while operating in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Purpose-build smuggling vessels like SPSSs are designed to hold large quantities of contraband while evading detection by law enforcement authorities.

These guys are good. Back before the USN became proficient at “Law Enforcement” type boardings, we had coasties work with our boarding teams out in the Persian Gulf catching smugglers. The more hardcore “opposed” boardings were MARSOC and other SOCOM types, and didn’t want or need any help.
Tear gas down the hatch would have been fun to watch.
The smugglers don’t have sanitation facilities. Tear gas would be welcome.
All those poor people won’t get their medicine now.
They interdicted us when we were coming north in the ICW from Florida into Georgia.
They pulled up along side and asked us if our boat could go any faster...it wouldn’t...it’s a heavy sail boat. So they escorted us through the area. Very friendly guys, but, they did have a 50 cal on the bow.
