The premise of the article from the NYT seems to be that his business acumen was not all that great and there doesn’t seem to be any legitimate reason for him to be in a position to accummulate wealth. Therefore, maybe the wealth is illusory.
Of course, working from that same premise we, not having the savvy of the NYT, start looking for what other sources of income he might have had. His plane and his island seem to be the ideal setup to blackmail some very well-heeled individuals.

I suspect if his wealth was an illusion as being suggested by the NYT, it’s also part of the fake news ‘illusion’. (As you accurately speculate). The MO would be to obscure the existence and/or sources of the wealth. Personally, I think he was laundering money the Clinton’s couldn’t hide through their foundation. Probably billions.
