President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping's face-to-face meeting on trade relations in Osaka, Japan, on Saturday "went better than expected," Trump said after the talks.

Trump described the meeting as "excellent" and said the U.S. and China were "back on track" in trade talks but added that "negotiations are continuing." He told reporters he would announce the results of the talks at a news conference later Saturday.

Encouraging, but there is a long ways to go, but at this point there is hope.

Yes, encouraging.

The world will get a lot farther with international cooperation than trading jabs.

Although I understand that is not always possible and sometimes more drastic measures are called for.

Trump needs to be very tough on China, on this agreement.

But he has been. We had an agreement already. Both sides agreed to it.

It was later, when it went back to China, that is was modified.

If China agrees to the original agreement again, 100% ok with this.

I completely trust Trump, in this matter.

100%

China is addicted to the American economy.
Amazing.
Trump does not even have enough time to wean them off.
Sorry China, it’s going to hurt a bit.

Our leaders have failed us SO bad.
It’s a disaster!

(Trump impression)

Trump is NOT backing down on China. Our media (includes the left) and the chamber of commerce republicrats cannot seem to stomach it and the press coverage has been extremely biased and unfair to the position of the President.

The key thing to understand about Trumpanomics and Trade is that Trump does not seek advantage. He only seeks fair and reciprocal trade where you (his opponent) and he (America) both benefit. Period. I think even Trump has acknowledged that true parity is likely not possible as we are the largest consumer nation in the world, but those nations we trade with should open their own markets to our products when possible and not practice unfair trade practices and intellectual theft against us.

I have been unsure how this fight would go with China and where it might lead, but I am more confident in his position now than I was even during the campaign. Even some of his skeptics in the European media have started to acknowledge that all Trump has demanded is fair and equal trade. I never thought I would see that, but more people are dropping their bias against the man long enough to admit the truth of it.

Trump is probably one of the most respected public figures in China. He has been very careful to NOT undermine the position and standing of Xi in any way while remaining very firm - it has never been personal. In summary, he has been brilliant and while we do not know how it will end in the short-term, he has created a true primer for negotiating in the future.

His economic team is fantastic and deserves an honorable mention. They (like Trump) are real world success stories instead of Ivy League academics that never ran a lemonade stand.

Your summation and assessment are accurate.

I think you figured it out.

I am sure pres. Trump will handle it well and gets the best deal possible.

I don’t understand your reply to me in 7

I did not disagree with anything Michael Corleone said in any way. I simply expressed amazement at how brilliant and certain Trump has been on his chosen path?

China buying a half billion tons of US soybeans the day before the meeting was a good sign.

Meh, Chinese are natural liars, know how to sweet-talk with tons of B$.

They want more time, want to run down the clock of Trump Admin.

US should:

Immediate tariffs, decertify MFN status, incrementally decrease PRC science grad students and H1B, etc.

They just want more time.

Some tariffs are already in place and will stay.

They were just talking about new ones.

I trust pres. Trump. He knows how far to turn the screws, but not harm US companies.

I think China is willing to give a little to keep and get something.

Apparently as a sign of good will, Trump is allowing Huawei resumed access to the US markets for parts and, in return, China will resume purchasing more agricultural products. Taking this at face value, it sounds like a good faith effort to continue to work out their differences.

Hopefully it will be enough to keep the equity market from taking a dive for the time being. I suppose we’ll get a better idea at 930 am Monday when the exchanges open.

Trump needs to build a wall around China. When they start migrating, that’ll be it for every other race on Earth. And if you don’t think they see their massive population as an offensive asset, you’re naive. I had to work around Chinese students who were selfish, conniving, cheating, conspiring little soldiers. They are the most dangerous race.
