MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - John Merrill officially announced Tuesday he will run for the U.S. Senate.

Merrill made the announcement around 10 a.m. Tuesday, releasing a video on social media.

Merrill was elected Alabama’s chief elections officer in 2014 and won re-election in 2018.

The Senate seat is currently held by Democrat Doug Jones, who defeated Republican Roy Moore in a 2017 special election.

John Merrill is a solid Christian Conservative, and is very well liked in Alabama.

He has twice been elected Secretary of State by margins of 30%+.

His announcement video is hard-hitting and to the point.

I like John Merrill and he is young enough (55) to eventually earn some Senate seniority.

If I lived in Alabama, I’d vote for him. Good luck Secretary Merrill!

You must of missed the thread on FR yesterday. Having the opinion that Moore can’t win can get you banned.

Won’t vote for Moore, but as a former affiliate of Theta Nu Epislon I won’t vote for Merrill either.

Good development for us folks in Alabama. From what I have seen of him, I like him. He carries himself well and should be able to articulate our case. I think he got screwed by the dishonest influence of Soros, but Judge Moore is taking it too far to be in this race this time.

If he makes it to the general election, Merrill will crush the leftist dirtbag Jones.

Click on my moniker in the forum and read the Moore thread. It was totally disgusting how posters who don’t want Moore to run were treated. BTW, Trump doesn’t want Moore to run either and publicly stated so.

With all due respect, given your seniority, I wouldn’t brag about supporting McCain. Maybe that is what did it.

McCain was on the ticket for President. Just who I was supposed to vote for? Obama?

I wrote in Palin for VP and either left the top of the ticket blank or wrote in somebody else—I figured the lawyers could figure out that I was voting for Palin’s electors, and if her electors wanted to vote for McCain, it was on their consciences.

You claimed in the link that I provided you were banned for a while for supporting McCain. I doubt it was between the time he became the presumed nominee and the time he managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Fine. I voted straight Republican ballot just like I always have since 1976.

You’d be wrong. There are just two many other alternatives today. Twitter and Parler for example. And I don’t have to donate a $100 here or there to post. And I am treated with much more respect than I am here.

Politics at the University of Alabama are controlled by a group of fraternities and sororities whose political wing is called Theta Nu Epsilon (an offshoot of Skull and Bones) but known colloquially as “the Machine”. Merrill received the Machine endorsement when he ran for SGA VP but did not receive it the next year when he ran for Pres. He ran anyway and it was a big scandal within the greek system at UofA.
My post was mostly tongue-in-cheek I have no problem voting for him.
