British paratroopers are taking part in the biggest airborne exercise since the end of the Cold War in a show of force to Russia.

The multinational exercise, based across four Eastern European countries, saw 7000 British, American and French troops join allies from over 20 nations in the month-long deployment.

Britain only has one Airborne Brigade. A Brigade usually consists of ~5,000. The whole British Army consists of ~ 81,500.

Pitiful.

But they’re pros. The professional contingent in the Russian ground forces is about 200K. I think the Brits would make mincemeat of them in any conventional confrontation. We have 5x the UK’s population and roughly 5x the regular troops. I don’t see the UK’s military as particularly weak relative to the forces it is likely to encounter.

Its nuclear deterrent could be bigger, but it has enough to completely exterminate the 30 biggest Russian cities, killing about 1/4 the Russian population. That is probably sufficient to deter a Russian first strike.

Right now the Brits are only good for special operations and hunting terrorists, that kind of thing.

That makes me wonder if now is a good time for Argentina to retake the Falkland Islands?

Only slightly more pitiful than our own country. In the UK, 0.11% of the population are in the British Army. In the US, it’s 0.15% (active component). In 1990, we had 2.1 million members in the active armed forces. Today we have only 1.3 million. We spend barely 4% of GDP on defense. Given what China, the DPRK, Iran, and others are doing with their military buildups, we should be doing much more.

The first adventure was actually a couple inches from disaster and only a great deal of luck and even MORE incompetence on the other side prevented it.
It is hard to predict would people act foolishly or not but I believe they know themselves not to push anything like that right now.

ROLFMAO. Pros in what? Buggery? British military these days is nothing, both conventional and strategic components.

Yeah the Argentines were inept back then. But I wonder if they bring their ships up close and fire on the islands, they could probably retake it. The Brits do not have an aircraft carrier and the Falklands are thousands of miles away so how would they resupply the isolated garrison?

Logistics are simpler these days but I don’t think the repeat of Falklands is planned by either side.

Nah. Not right now. But wait a generation or two. I wouldn’t be surprised if Argentina tries to retake the Falklands. They’ve never given up their claim on the islands.

No dispute here. It would be Argentinian one day for sure.
All that read coat chest beating is ridiculous.
Falkland War was a great overextension for them which only worked by miracle and they want it to look as a confirmation as their out of this world capabilities?
In a real conflict with a first tier opponent they’d need to pull multiple operations the scale of Falkland War every week to possibly stay aflot.
And that’s of course is way over their head.

A Russian military that lost 7 aircraft in a conventional invasion of *Georgia* is probably little better than the Third World militaries that provide Russia with much of its export sales. The British Army would roll right over the Russians in a conventional fight. It was always assumed that NATO forces would have the qualitative edge, but overwhelming Warsaw Pact numbers, and the fact that the Soviets would, as the invading force, have the initiative, would make any conflict a close-run thing. Then Desert Storm showed the world just how decrepit Eastern Bloc equipment and tactics actually were. It’s a mistake to mention British and Russian forces in the same breath.

Hard to do so without an air force. Or a navy.

Yep, they won El-Alamein. /s

Georgian War in 2008 is probably just a little more relevant now than Desert Storm in 1991. But not by much.

Not to mention half of lost aircraft in August War are to friendly fire. And since you talk about equipment which air defences Georgian had? Martian?

You obviously are unaware of the absolute shit-state of the Argentine armed forces. Back then, they had an aircraft carrier and a capable airforce. Nowadays they have no combat jets and a few barely functional surface combatants in a poor state of repair and inadequate training, and no logistical capacity to launch and invasion capable of overwhelming the 1,500 garrison on the Falklands. The Falklands garrison alone has more military capability than the entire Argentine military these days.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth will also reach IOC next year, with F35Bs. Argentina ain’t taking anything, never mind holding it.

You have no idea what you are talking about, yet you offer an opinion.

That would require the argies to stop being argies and run an actual functional economy capable of supporting a decent military. That ain’t going to happen in our lifetimes. By contrast, our military budget is going to be going up because the government is finally waking up to the fact that the world is becoming a more dangerous place and is raising the budget accordingly.

I am fully aware but we are talking long term. Even if it would come to sticks and stones Argentines would have better chances due to a proximity of the islands.

Long term Argies are still Argies. They can’t build a functioning economy that could support an actual, capable military, and even if they did, by that point they’d have a lot more to lose by attempting to invade the islands. They’d end up being sanctioned and isolated by Britain’s allies, of which the UK has more and more powerful ones than they have and their economy would collapse.

One of the reasons why they gave up combat jets is because Britain makes a lot of the components used in western jets and they refused to supply any if the contracts were aimed at Argentina, and Britain’s aerospace industry is likely to be crucial to making western military components long into the future, and Argentina is not.

The strategic situation of Argentina is likely not going to improve relative to the UK at any point in the foreseeable future, certainly not in our lifetimes.

Of all of Britain’s enemies to take seriously, Argentina is not one of them, they are a joke. Russia and China are far more of a threat, the latter particularly in the long term, but since these are mutual enemies of the US, this is only a concern if American military power is supplanted by China’s.
