A massive fire has erupted at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in Southwest Philadelphia shaking nearby homes and sending thick smoke into the air. Homes as far away as South Jersey were rocked by a series of explosions as the blaze, which erupted shortly after 4 a.m., burned. Some residents in Philadelphia said the explosions knocked art off their walls. The fire is contained on the property off Passyunk Avenue of the refinery, fire officials said shortly before 6 a.m. Authorities have not yet said if any workers were injured or not.

Investment bankers took it over and milked it, it was in bankruptcy by the beginning of 2018. Probably a fair amount of deferred maintenance.

No, Wilson Goode was mayor of Philly during that torcing of rowhouses, and not Frank Rizzo. Goode was Philly’s first black mayor, a fact which somewhat neutralized da commoonity’s response to the blaze. Had it been Rizzo, the whole city would have been torched.
Do I ever. I was driving on the Penrose Avenue bridge over the refineries when it broke out. Horrifying. Glad the bridge didn't go down; but they had to close it and check for structural damage as soon as they got the situation under control. As I recall, Frank Rizzo's brother was the fire chief at the time.
I lived about three miles from there. You could start to clean the soot off your windowsill, and by the time you got from one end to the other end, the first end was sooty again.
Abington is 10 or more miles away from the refineries.
I ived there and had close ties with a number of City officials including the prosecuting District Attorney on the MOVE case, and don't remember it that way. I think Rizzo just got dumped on for everything by blacks, but Rizzo had stopped being Police Commissioner in 1971 (Sambor and Armstrong were PC in 1985, the year of the firebombing) and ended his term as mayor five years prevously in 1980. But he was long-hated by the left for supposed police brutality against blacks.
Given today's situation with fake news, I wonder what the truth of it really was.
Remember most of these refineries have been in there current location 75-100 years. The town and cities have grown up around them. Many originally had buffer areas around them, but most have not kept that space.
Will be interesting to see what was the cause of this.

Yes, that's right, in the city of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Musueum of Art, the Rodin Museum, the Barnes Collection museum of art, three medical schools, six major hospitals and research centers, three major universities including an Ivy League one (UPenn) founded by Benjamin Frankin, the Philadelphia Opera Company, the Philadelphia Ballet, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Philadelphia Academy of Music, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, the Bach Festival of Philadelphia, three colleges of the arts, a National Park housing the historic places where our Constitution was written, the Franklin Institute Science Museum, the National Consitution Center, the Museum of the American Revolution, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the University of Pennsylvaniia archaeological museum, the Mutter Museum of medical history, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Independence Seaport Museum... that City. If you set down in the middle of town at City Hall, you can walk to every one of those attractions, and more. Yes, Philadelphians are a bunch of real schlubs.

I remember many trips on Rt 1/9 between New Brunswick and Newark. Your nose always told you when you were passing the refinery; near Elizabeth I believe. Actually, it was the same whether on Rt 1/9 or the NJ Turnpike. At night you could see the flame-plumes from the methane burn off.
