- The Cleveland Clinic has joined other top hospitals in North America and can now offer in utero surgery. The hospital announced Wednesday that after more than a year of preparations they have successfully completed Northern Ohio’s first ever surgery on a fetus inside the uterus to repair spina bifida.

“The operation on the fetus in the uterus, I’m directing and in charge of, and the guidance of where we should open the uterus, the exposure of the baby,” said Dr. Darrell Cass, Director of Fetal Surgery in the Cleveland Clinic’s Fetal Center.

Cass and a team of more than a dozen other specialists including pediatric neurosurgeons, a fetal cardiologist and pediatric anesthesiologists performed the surgery on a nearly 23-week fetus with the birth defect spina bifida in February.

It’s proof that God continues to aid men and women of the medical field to provide care to children before they are born, enabling them to live fuller and longer lives.

Abortion is murder...

How can this be? Abortion defenders insist it's not a human. Did a vet do the surgery? Was it imaginary?
And how dare they PRESUME to 'fix' it! Are they implying that a disability is bad? Aren't they to be celebrated instead of 'fixed'? If it's good to fix one birth defect( on a quasi, sometimes, maybe human) what if Downs Syndrome can one day be fixed before birth, missing limbs, autism, homosexuality? IF disabilities are not bad, why fix them? And if they are fixable, are they not bad? Would not fixing them be abuse? Who would WANT a disabled child if it could be made normal?
Whoops-there's that indefinable word. How dare anyone judge the disabled as not normal? Those doctors are not very PC,are they?

Other than closure, I really don't know the answer to that.

When our son was born, the Drs. were quite clear in apprising us that, in addition to existing neurological damage, closure carried with it significant risk of slicing neuro pathways that were invisible even with the microscope they were using during the surgery. Our son was 7 hours old at the time of the surgery.

Subsequent to the surgery he suffered cardiac arrest. Was read his last rites. Severe clinically diagnosed mental retardation resulted, but he survived.

A year and a half later he went into grand mal seize for five hours. Again, read his last rites. Again, he survived.

He is now 45 and in a group home, though we had him with us for 41 years.

“The operation on the fetus”

On the fetus?? How about “the operation on the unviable tissue mass”. It would be no more ridiculous.

It sounds like medical science are learning away around it. Hope so.

All kids can be challenging. Your baby is more challenging than most. Prayers.

It's a first for that hospital and they deserve congratulations. Samuel Armas is likely a teenager by now. The famous photograph of him wrapping his tiny hand around the doctor's finger is unforgettable.
