A large cross in Bladensburg, Maryland has been a source of controversy for years as we awaited the Supreme Court's decision on whether the symbol can continue to stand. A local post of The American Legion erected the Bladensburg Peace Cross in 1925. To most, the statue was dedicated to the memory of 49 local heroes who gave their lives serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in WWI. To the Humanist Association, it was an unconstitutional eyesore. They sued in 2014 arguing the cross violated the Establishment Clause and demanded its removal. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit agreed with the plaintiffs and declared the cross unconstitutional.
First Liberty Institute, representing the American Legion, asked the Supreme Court to overturn that decision. And on Thursday, they did. It was a 7-2 decision, with Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor dissenting. Justice Samuel Alito offered the majority opinion.

"Although the cross has long been a preeminent Christian symbol, its use in the Bladensburg memorial has a special significance," Alito writes.

Good question. In light of this ruling, shouldn’t previous decisions be overturned as well? Legally I don’t know if that will.happen, but it sounds like it should.

Reminds me of the priests of Kafiristan in The Man Who Would Be King. So they would not see offensive things they walked around with their eyes closed.

Wonder if these “humanists” will demand removal of crosses in Military cemeteries.
It looks like that era saw a lot of memorial crosses being built to remember WW1 dead. The one in San Francisco is in a city park on Mount Davidson in the southern part of town. In the 1990's the ACLU and affiliated leftist groups sued to have it removed. The case made it to the 9th circuit and you can imagine how they ruled.
Rather than face an expensive and uncertain appeal the city auctioned off about a quarter acre of land where the cross was located. An Armenian group bought the land and didn't make any changed other than installing a plaque commemorating victims of the Armenian genocide which also took place during WW1. Most people thought it was a good addition to the site - and the leftist were frustrated again.
Does anybody know what happened regarding the cross in San Diego county that the left wanted to tear down as well?
Yup. America was racist in 1918, therefore, the dead it’s commemorating deserved to die, because they were fascists ku klux klansmen. Or something to that effect, which they’ll blabber aloud as they set fire to the cross (irony intentional).

My screen name is for my son, a retired Navy Captain {25+ years} that started his Naval duty on the Alaska {5 years}.
I was a drafted US Army grunt, pill roller, that got extended for 6 months by JFK due to the Ruskies screwing around with a Berlin blockade. When they said my time was up, I saluted {smartly} and went home, and never looked back.
I never regretted my time in the service, but a military carrier was not for me.
