(Snip) What’s going on? Economists point to a variety of explanations.

The global economy has gotten weaker and the U.S. dollar stronger, making imports cheaper for Americans to buy and lessening the impact of tariffs. The cost of imports excluding foreign oil have fallen almost 1% in the past year.

“We are importing deflation,” asserted chief U.S. economist Chris Low of FTN Financial.

It will benefit us all if we can bring back appliances to the USA, because the stuff we have now is pure crap. Father in law just replaced his dishwasher after 26 years! Mine lasted 1 year.

The importers' huge margins were cut.

a) discourages imports;

b) encourages US production;

c) generates more tax revenues

d) no increases in prices

Smells like winning to me.

It does. It has to be driving the left nuts when the toast lands butter side up for Trump every time.

The rules are different, for the USA — because, it’s the world’s most successful ‘trading bloc’ all by itself. Smaller economies (such as Canada’s) can reap huge benefits from trade deals — because of economies-of-scale, among other things.

The USA has a huge economy, and thus great economies-of-scale. Among the “other things”, the USA is a very diverse economy, and has access to resources from the arctic to the tropics. You don’t need to import oranges, or Arctic char, for instance. The USA could be an autarky — only Hollywood, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley would really suffer from that.

The repair guy told me that industry standards to get the ECO symbol means they have to use less water and run longer hours. His opinion was that though this saves water it does a crappier job at cleaning dishes.
