Former Broward County Sheriff Deputy Scot Peterson has been charged with child neglect under a statute that applies to caregivers. Legal experts say it's a novel approach that could make the case against him difficult to prove.
Prosecutors will have to show that Peterson was a caregiver and exposed students and teachers to harm with his actions, with reckless disregard for their lives, attorneys say. Peterson's case will be widely watched, they say, and its outcome could affect how officers respond to crises.

I suspect they used this charge to sabotage his prosecution. This county is an absolute Rats nest.

Yeah, officers didn’t used to hide and wait when kids were being mowed down. This is a recent thing.
Already with the BS.
The “SCOTUS says we ain’t gotta do squat” defense isn’t going to work on a jury. It is true in a general sense, that the Police are not required to defend individuals, but they are supposed to protect the general public and keep the peace. Children being slaughtered by a nutbar, yeah, you gotta engage. I wouldn’t like it either, but that’s why they make the big bucks right? Jus’ Sayin’
Of course if they aren’t required to do anything then let’s just get rid of the whole operation, or scale it back 90% and use Citizen patrols and vigilantes. What are we paying them for otherwise? Between the schools and the cop shop, I have several thousand dollars extracted annually that I can find a LOT better use for.
The larger issue is that Schools are a stand in for the parents. That’s where “In Loco Parentis” comes in. They are responsible for their charges as soon as they are dropped off till they get home.
This business of sticking it to the taxpayer in lawsuits is kind of perverted, because it’s the same people who were harmed in the first place.
Make these idiots PAY. The problem is EVERYTHING has been cost shifted, hide the pea shell games going on. Make them feel the pain, and things will get better. Till then, nothing will change. We’re talking seriously deluded, defective-brained people in some of the education departments.
The Supreme Court has already ruled that the police do not have a duty to protect.
The police are there to write the reports after all the violence has ended.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
The guy is everything you don’t want in a law enforcement officer, but it’s bulls-— to try to classify him as a “caregiver” and charge him with “child neglect.” He may be a loser who failed to courageously do his job, but you can’t charge him under a statute that has essentially nothing to do with what he did or didn’t do. He wasn’t a babysitter who let kiddies drink paint while he smoked pot.
Petersen was also Arrested for Inaction----his failure to do nothing to stop the Parkland gunman during the February 14, 2018, attack.
On March 15, 2018, Breitbart News reported on surveillance video that allegedly shows Peterson standing outside building 12 while the attack occurred.
Then-Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel (now ousted) told ABC News the video showed Peterson arrive at the west side of Building 12, take a position but never go in.
Seventeen innocent teens and faculty lost their lives during the attack.
===================================
All the legal and professional ramifications for Peterson's inaction are on the mark.......but we would like to believe even cops have a measure of humanity.
The frightening sounds of kids being shot and screaming for help should have roused him to action. That he chose not to act in the midst of the carnage is the real crime here.
What person with the last name Peterson, would name their son Scott. It seems like bad luck.
One way or the other, he will be dealt with. Quietly outside by a parent, or inside by a convict... no so quietly
The parents of Parkland school shooting victims are suing (A) the Broward County school board and
(B) the the sheriff’s office for failing to take timely action against the school shooter
who massacred 17 students and faculty in 2018.
It is very instructive that the bereaved parents of the slaughtered victims are the ones being literally forced to lead the search for justice b/c the Broward PTB chickened out.
An investigation showed the on-site officer:
<><> refused to investigate where the gunshots were coming from,
<><> retreated during the gunfire as victims were being shot,
<><> directed other law enforcement who arrived on scene to remain 500 feet away from the building.
I believe the courts have ruled in the past that the police do not have a duty to protect you. I’m not sure any of those cases, however, involved an officer being on scene and willfully avoiding confrontation with a violent offender. Seems they might have a duty to do that, though some of this may depend on the department policy where he was employed. If the policy was, “wait for backup before entry” then I would think he’d be found not guilty. Maybe they could just find him “not innocent” since that seems to be the new standard we’re using these day.
Yeah ... not while the police are not obligated to risk their lives to help ... the prosecutors are fooling themselves if they think that will change.

Yeah, he took a position that allowed him to use the students as a bulletproof vest.
Pretty sure the author has never read any literature or historical accounts written before the mid nineteenth century.
That's the sort of thing that Trump was elected to bring about.
Good point....the SOB made sure to save himself.
Do police have a duty to attempt to stop a crime in action? I’m a retired prison guard. One of my duties was to see to the welfare of the inmates (break up fights, put down riots, extinguish fires, etc.). Otherwise, why train me in these methods? Why certify me every year? I would think that “seeing to the welfare of the students” would fall under Peterson’s duties.
Exactly. We will never correct mistakes of the past by refusing to undertake the fight.
As callous as it seems, I don’t believe that people in Peterson’s past position are mandated to sacrifice their lives for adults, children or animals while on or off duty. Call me a coward, I don’t care. If anyone can show me where in America it is mandated then I would like to read that text for myself.
