Mnuchin says Trump still has authority to impose tariffs if Mexico does not abide by deal
CNBC ^ | June 8, 2019 | Spencer Kimball

“Our expectation is that Mexico will do what they’ve committed to do and our expectation is that we won’t need to put tariffs in place, but obviously if that’s not the case, the president retains that authority,” Mnuchin told Reuters.

Trump announced Friday evening that the U.S would “indefinitely” suspend planned tariffs against Mexico, which were scheduled to go into effect on Monday.

In return, Mexico agreed to deploy its national guard to crack down on Central American migrants travelling through the country on their way to the U.S. southern border.

Excellent. You have to keep the sword over their heads, or they will go back on their promises

It will be hard for Mexico to enforce this, since they will be fighting the cartels and the corrupt Mexican officials.

But they have serious incentives to abide by the deal. Trump is not kidding.

I thought I heard POTUS can throw this deal out the window in 90 days if Mexico fails to perform. My question is do we have to wait 90 days if we get an immediate lackluster response? A lot of illegals can flood over in 3 months.

I don’t think we need to wait at all. If they keep coming, tariffs are implemented right away. I think that is the point, and it is an important one.

Reserving the right to reimpose the tariffs ought to include provision to make the skip straight to 10% which was to have been phase 2.

Not even worried. DJT didn’t play games.

Here is what I have observed about this whole Mexican tariff thing and the left’s multiple pearl clutching reactions:

Trump announces tariffs.
Leftists scream “it’ll hurt consumers! He doesn’t care about the consumer!”

Trump announces negotiations.
Leftists scream “Mexico will never submit to these threats!”

Trump announces signed agreement.
Leftists scream “Trump caved!”

Trump announces details of agreement showing he won.
Leftists scream “Trump gave away too much to Mexico!”

You are so right. And remember, that sword is also over the corporatist, globalist, anti Trumper class too. If Trump doesn't ever back down, if threats and promises are REALLY his promises, he will very rarely have to carry them out.

Of course he does, if Mexico doesn’t comply the ‘deal’ is null and void.

“I thought I heard POTUS can throw this deal out the window in 90 days”

You kidding me? I didnt hear nor read that one. Then why did he OUT OF THE BLUE come up with “10 days or tariffs” threats? Trump has no patience for this sh*t. If he couldnt stand 10 days, then where does he get the patience for 90 days?

If they renig, or play “fast and loose” on the “deal”: WHACK THEM so HARD and so FAST that they won’t try and pull a fast one ever again.

I don’t trust them at all, period. Me thinks they are trying to play President Trump for a fool. Hopefully they’ll get the message loud and clear:

President Trump is no one’s fool.

Talk to Congress about that one. Especially the Republicans that didn’t do anything for two years.

Doubtful the illicit drug trade requires the volume of illegals crossing into the US.
